One good way to find leeches is to wait for a largish vernal pool or swampy area to dry up and turn over rocks and logs left in the mud. Usually there will be leeches hiding in little tunnels underneath them.

Macrobdella decora is a very large, common and colorful leech found in Vermont, but they feed mainly on vertebrate prey such as fish, frogs, tadpoles and frog eggs. They drink human blood too but sometimes seem to be reluctant to do so compared to other species.

I've often found them attached to turtles. Name it Vlad or Booger.

I've usually found leeches in small, slow moving, heavily vegetated bodies of water. They would come out at dusk and look for prey. Strangely though the first leech I found was in a clear, clean, fast moving stream:bored:
