Theraphosa apophysis worth getting?

Everyone reacts differently to different species, for me Lasiodora hairs are hands-down the worst out of any species I've kept. Theraphosa hairs just make me itch a bit, Lasiodora hairs make me itch like crazy and cause a rash (basically slight reddening of the skin and what resembles goosebumps). A hot shower usually gets rid of the worst of it, and any residual itching/redness usually goes away completely by the next day.
Interesting! I’d assume maybe people just have different reactions to different urticating hair types? I believe there is 6 or 7? I always heard LP were one of the worst but never heard anyone mention Goliaths being crazy bad before now. Definitely interesting haha either way wouldn’t deter me from getting any of them lmao

My little T. apophysis sling is absolutely nuts. Slaps and jumps when I'm just adding water to the enclosure. I think its hysterical. As for hairs, I get rashes from my A. chalchodes so I don't think my opinion counts XD
Haha awesome to know though, thanks!! I love aggressive Ts lol just make it worth while, and deters me from wanting to try and hold it 🤣 which I know is a whole other great debate

To be fair, if you just want a Theraphosa, then a T. stirmi will do just fine. As much as I like the T. apophysis, I don't think they're worth the expensive price at the moment. Although I have females, I would love to produce them in the future, but males are so hard to find for me. I'm hoping the next show this weekend will have a male. Overall, It's really dependent on whether you find the price worth it or not.

An actual show or are you going the the fear not grand opening this weekend? And amazing pics thank you for sharing! Honestly what drew me to these over stirmi was just that I haven’t seen them mentioned a lot and I always like odd species I don’t see often and always had an interest in getting a Goliath after my first LP years ago

You have only slight itching now but......Prolonged and repeated exposure to urticating setae can worsen the subsequent reactions with expsosure. Just because it is not bad now doesnt mean it will not get untolerable in the future. Your best bet with, the traditionally bad urticating setae species, is to take all precautions to reduce exposures so that you do not develop a worsening reaction with time.
I have never heard that before about prolonged exposure making it worse over a time span. Would have thought it is what it is as long as it’s the same urticating type. Very interesting and thank you for that info!

I have had just the pleasure of having the blondi...but like others have said, they can all be kept the same.

I have to think the deciding factor may be the price, and size you find?.

Buy several pairs of long cuff dishwashing latex gloves. And maybe safety goggles. We are not kidding about the hairs, even the ones they don't kick directly at you.
Always have gloves and goggles on hand for my fish articulation projects so no worries there and I understand how bad they can be haha I’ll be looking forward to the displeasure 🤣

My t. apophysis has quickly become one of my favorite tarantulas due to how enthusiastically they respond to prey or anything that moves, including water being dripped into the container. I know it’s time to feed them when they charge at the little stream of water lol. I was willing to pay more for them than other Theraphosa species solely for aesthetic reasons though to be honest.
Aesthetics are what I try to look for too lol why wouldn’t we? 😉 haha awesome to hear how aggressive they all can be though haha I heard apophysis needed to be kept a little more humid that the others but haven’t seen anyone mention that as of yet

@MushManMike by the way you can use the multi quote function and press “+ quote” at the bottom of each message and do that to multiple messages and then in your reply insert quotes to multiple folks at once.

What draws you to stirmi over the others?
I prefer the thicker legs/femurs on the Stirmi. I like apophysis but have a hard time getting over the skinny legs.
I also prefer Stirmi over blondi due to the bigger fangs / chelicerae. But I do like blondi for its hairiness.
It's just a preference thing. I'll probably keep them all eventually, because Theraphosa genus is my favorite.

I definitely like em thick too 🤣 didn’t really notice a huge difference initially but definitely more so now it’s side by side and notated!! Been trying to get my hands on a stout legged baboon as I think those are pretty neat! I know Theraphosa are the largest in general but are there any others that have larger carapace to body size? Or to leg length that you know of? I think I remember seeing some species throughout my searches of Ts and thinking DAMN but I have no clue as to what it was or what I was looking at at the time

I always think it’s worth remembering that these guys are the real giants, but there are plenty of other big, solid Ts!

Richard ‘Tarantula Collective’ did a Top 10 just the other day on youtube. Not linking it in case it’s not allowed.

Just wanted to know if anyone had any thoughts/experiences with them vs. T. strimi or T. Blondi they wouldn’t mind sharing as far as looks, care, sass 😅
I have a therophosa stirmi, they aren't as difficult to take care of as I thought, but I still worry I'm going to do something wrong. They have amazing feeding responses and grow quickly, I really enjoy mine and would recommend them : )

One more thing, the best advise I ever got on there care, "humidity + ventilation = happy therophosa "

I have 3 apophysis and 2 blondis. They both are very beautiful spiders. They both can be pretty fast but the apophysis is a little more bolty. When they get a little bigger they definitely slow down. The hairs are not bad at all if you don’t handle and don’t stick ur face in their enclosure you should have no problems. Don’t handle a molt with your bare hands though, I learned that the hard way.

Any reason in perticular? Prefer blondi or stirmi? Or just not a fan of the genus in general? I keep pretty much all OW but have been trying to dabble in NW stuff
Not a fan of their looks. Impressive size, like right out of Jurassic Park sorta.

Some people stick with NW or OW or both.

Doesn’t matter.

I like poofy Ts, so I own a lot of the Avics
