The highlights show up after a short while on them and as far as looking for a sperm web you can usually spot the crumpled up web when they are done if the tank is otherwise web free.

Also it's easy to tell by simply looking at the palps. The bulbs are pretty easy to spot and the shape of the palp tip changes and becomes thicker than the feet when mature.

Damn! That is the kind of picture that could really persuade me to acquire one these. How long do they remain black before they brown out?

Jon

Am I the only one who feels that this spider shouldn't really be in the Aphonopelma genus?

It's an individual thing really. Of the couple dozen or so of them I have kept there are a few that don't really brown out. This one in particular never does. The worst she does is lose some of the dark black and go kind of dark grey but still pretty much looks this way all the time. It also depends on locality from my understanding to a pretty good degree.

Glad to hear it turned out to be a female for ya. Sure beats having just a male. :)

Yeah sorry about that Phil. I do have one more seemani, it's littler than the female, but hasnt molted since Ive had it, so that one might be male. lol The littler one does have a bit of an attitude to it though.

A few years ago a friend of mine had a cute little brown and white female rate get loose and never caught it... later, for some reason they saw some very strangely marked/colored rats on occasion. A neighbor even caught a black, brown, tan, and white one in a trap :(

Not a problem at all. I really am glad it turned out to be female for ya so it can be enjoyed for years to come. They truly are a great species. But then again I like most all species. :)
