The invert hobby is one of the most highly addictive hobbies. True or False

Not at all addictive. Those little baby spiders eventually grow up and need more of everything. More dirt, more plastic boxes, more food, more time, more space, and so on. Besides, the price for tarantulas are insane these days. I just saw today that someone is selling an adult female Aphonopelma hentzi for $150. People are out of their minds. :astonished:

As you get older, you’ll find women are the most addictive hobby. They come in all different colors, personalities etc.. if I were to recommend a good beginner species. Start with a nice girl from your local church, after some experience, then you can move up to more advanced species like strippers and so on.
college girls are best they're smart have a plan/goals etc in life strippers to much baggage usually mental/emotional or just a package deal complete with kid or kids

I'll definitely admit that when i started i had to reel myself in and not go crazy... I'm a big collector, war stuff, pokemon cards, tattoos, so when i found out how many species are out there of spider i got very excited about collecting some.

I think the difference here though is that these guys are living creatures and need care; you don't get to put them on the shelf or in a book and enjoy them at your leisure. So i think that's where (most) responsible people consider this and show some restraint.

It can definitely depend on your personality type though, and many, many people go from 0 spiders to 10,20,50+ in a very short space of time then suddenly realise they either aren't that interested or can't take care of them adequately.

It's ok to get excited about T collecting, as long as you remember that they are counting on solely you to give them the care they need, and if buying more means depriving one you have of care, its time to call it a day.

It can be addictive. I’ve learned over the years that not every breeding will go well. Not every sling will survive and future plans may not work out. So for the experienced keeper you eventually realize it’s not about addiction. With addiction it’s out of control and when you’re new yes it’s a big world. In retrospect for me it’s more about patience. Self control. Negotiations. Feeding cleaning chores. You run the show. The spiders and coin do not. It’s chess. It’s a game now and the reward comes from restraint and planning. Not from waking up saying “I can’t believe I blew 500$ on a website time to check my tracking number all day.”

Honestly, snakes are far more addictive!!!!
Couldn’t agree more, reptiles and amphibians far more interesting than Ts. I like my 8 legged friends a lot, but they are not as interesting.

I can handle my snakes!

I know for me true. I’m extremely addicted to tarantulas. Sometimes I don’t understand how everyone is not fascinated by tarantulas.
Can not be. A hobby is something that you have control over. An addiction cannot be controlled and should therefore stay away from it.
For me, spiders are a passion, nothing more and nothing less!

It can become an addiction if you let it. I would love to have a few more but I really do appreciate the ones I have now, even if they're not particularly active. But available space is what keeps me from going further and that's ok. Better my current quartet than none at all, I always say. Besides enjoying watching them every once in a while, I do spend a fair amount of time on this forum. Not only can I get into interesting discussions with others, but I'm also capable to help most newcomers. That is a reward in and of itself.

I'm way too anxious to go out and buy new species all the time. I'll probably only have my one enclosure for a long time, as I do have a few other pets who need upgrades and stuff and I need to do that before I add anyone else to my household.

Money, time, and space constraints all keep me from collecting. Maybe if I stumble into a million dollars it would be different 😆.

I completely agree! I certainly do not know everything like at all. But i love contributing and helping newcomers with basic things to save the strength of the super knowledgeable people that can answer the hard questions

I just got visions of 200,000 $5

In all honesty for me this hobby (altough I don't like too much the term 'hobby' in regards of keeping living animals) isn't addictive like too many people used and still use to think.

I have other hobbies which are, by a long shot, more addictive to me (and my damn pockets), like being a comics collector etc

Another thing I think is worth mentioning (in regards of intensive T's keeping) is that not everyone is lucky enough for have a dedicated room for T's.
A medium to large enclosure (say for a Theraphosa spp.) needs "his" space, after all, so go figure 50 of those.

Besides, the price for tarantulas are insane these days. I just saw today that someone is selling an adult female Aphonopelma hentzi for $150. People are out of their minds. :astonished:
Couldn't agree more. I really hope that those crazy prices aren't the result of those very few recent years where IMO T's went a bit too much "sensationalized" (like in a lot of YT vids, which focus more into aesthetics rather than legit care etc).

Don't know in other nations but here in Italy I'm almost sure of that after reading various posts of folks that never heard before about a P. irminia but seek the likes of 'pokies' and such.

One thing is sure: The T's keeping is living a "revival".

In the grand scheme of hobbies? False for sure, if we are including hobbies that give you highs, like gambling and drugs and such. Personally? Also false, fishing, paintball, and racing all give rushes that only are obtained when an obt runs up your arm in this hobby.

I'd say false, imo it depends on the individual person whether something becomes addictive, not the hobby itself
