To make it even easier, you can abbreviate the genus in speaking about them and people will still understand.
O aureotibialis
C sp. Kalimantan
LOL at "People will still understand."
Easier to type, but not easier for everyone to understand what you would be talking about. Might as well just use the common name if it is too much trouble to type out the full genus name.

Except when it’s “sp. Area, City, State, Provence, Country” :troll:
The abbreviation for species (sp.) used in open nomenclature should still be lower case. Everything else following it is just hobby mumbo jumbo and it doesn't matter if it is capitalized or not.

At the end of the day though, these rules only apply to scientific writing. When writing in informal situations like pet message boards, all that is important is communicating clearly. Everything else doesn't matter.

For sp i dont keep I learned by watching alot of Tom moran, (some vids several times 😆) then I come on here n play guess that spood with the pics in the media feed.
I try n guess the names before I click on or look at the description under the pic. My son likes to play it too 😁.

For my spoods labels also helped, so did research. Any good information on the sp you keep will use the proper names not the common, after a while of reading up on my sp, the names stick. If you research your spoods alot you may find the same thing happens.
Search bar on here is your best friend for any info 😉.

Association names help too eg Milly the minax or Ester the ecclesiasticus . This helped me alot. I am much better at remembering when I can use association 😊.

So I'm just gonna say it! Whomever came up with the proper names had way to much time on their hands in life! And what's worse is the hundreds or even thousands of people that got duped and went along with that nonsense! Lol!!!

Don't know about u guys but here is my final determination:

Option A: someone posts about their T and it's completely in Latin and foreign language no one here can even say properly out loud. I have to take 20 minutes and research this stupid name before figuring out what the T actually is.

Option B: get ready boys here comes heresy!!!! You simply state cobalt blue or braz black or whatever. Done and hey no one had to waste 20 minutes of their life researching the Latin name!

I understand how the proper names can be useful i do. I really do. But sorry I'm busy in life and not in my mom's basement at 50 studying proper names.

I never would have guessed everyone in the hobby was a scholar and held Doctorate degrees.

Lay it on me! Again how dare I! Heresy hang him from a tree!

Here are my setups. Going to need 6 new tanks once my babies get some size. Plexiglass dividers for now.
I have 8 Ts that range from 2.5 inch up to 7inch. The other 9 are .5 up to 2inch.

"I have a question regarding my mexican red knee......." could be a couple of species.
"I have a question regarding my Brachypelma smithii....." instant identification of the species and in turn more reliable answers.
Really that simple.

Then again, why bother when you can have other people spoon feed you information I guess.

I agree with those of you advocating for don't hold your Ts. I've held my braz black and few times but you could tell they don't like it.
But one of my Ts that is so gentle and so chill that I want to hold him once now I won't but I'm tempted is my rear horned baboon. He's maybe 3.5inch. But since I got him 6 months ago for an OW he/she is really laid back. Need a molt to find out sex. One of my favs is socatra island baboon. She was small when I got her and didn't show herself for a few months. Now she's out all the time and looking amazing!!!

I understand what your saying 100%.
Maybe just my stage in life but I just don't have the time to dedicate to learning and memorizing the proper names. Yes please spoon feed me so I don't waste 20 minutes figuring out what T and post or forum is talking about. All day spoon feed me if it spares me playing scientist.

Instead they waste days going back and forth on a forum when their Blue Jewel, or Fire Leg, or Orange Flame etc has an issue because no one has a clue what animal they own🤮. Because common names make so much more sense 🤮🙄

Viper, I see you are well respected and a long time member and major contributor and help to people and thats awesome! Love it! But FYI I am a ferocious reader and am self taught on my Ts through days and days of endless reading. So while yes I am an outsider and hate the proper names that doesn't mean I'm clueless or new to hobby. I have answered hundreds of my own questions and concerns through reading and research and making mistakes. I'm not spoon feed me lazy type of dude in any capacity. I guess I just want to be able to bum this site and often as I have for months now without such the time commitment needed to research what freaking spider are they talking about.

Also I have not joined a forum in many years! I'm self taught on bow hunting, bass fishing, owning a boat, and built a custom cycle from the ground up. My last online forum was a solid bowhutning site. But being off for so many years it is truly shocking to be reintroduced to keyboard warriors. In real life face to face not one person would answer another human being the way they do on forums. Pretty sad.

Anyways we can kill this post and move on as no point in me saying I like common names and everyone else hating common names. More to life and what a wonderful and VERY enjoyable hobby we participate in! My family and friends are floored when they hear i not only have a tarantula but 17 of them lol! They just don't get it lol!
Cheers boys.

aren’t we all outsiders?

I wasn’t suggesting you personally need to learn scientific names in the big picture.

Does it help- YES, more often than not. Especially with new first time owners of Ts. The main issue with many people esp the new people is they don’t provide enough info.

Personally I don’t care if someone learns them or not PROVIDED they can communicate clearly.

when someone, not you in this case, comes in and says their blue jewel isn’t eating etc, I give them advice as if they own an Avic, hope for the best!

See if they can’t communicate correctly, that’s their issue. It’s not my responsibility to clarify what species they own.

I know you wouldn’t have that issue given all the things that you do that were self-taught and given you’re not new to owning Ts 😎

y only T that has me on edge and super guarded doing ANYTHING in the tank is my OBT. That goofy thing decided to sprint at 1000mph across the lid to get me. I closed the lid in lighting speed as it was only half open just in time. He was 1 centimeter from my hand. His leg got caught in the lid thus breaking it
this will be my study case for tonight.

i have 2 obt’s.

you need to over come this “edgy” feeling. Because it will get worse. The OBT will only get more assertive.

if enclosure is too small for you, make it bigger. It should not be coming at you like this, and if it does, it would be better if your enclosure was adapted to these possibilites.

i am happy for you it was just a leg. But the thing is, next time, it could get you and you wouldnt know it.

i definitely do not want to erase your experience. You have your background, which is unkown to me.

but seeing how quick and strong my OBT’s can be, you want to eliminate all that risk. And maybe a different enclosure would work better for you.

do you have photos of it?

this concerns me more then your grasp of terminology, which i could work around easily.

thanks for coming here with your questions.

Good folks on here! Thanks Guys.
Yeah tomorrow when my lights are on I'll post a pic of the OBT setup.
Eventually it's getting it's forever tank but for now being around 2.5inch she has plenty of room.
