LOL at "People will still understand."To make it even easier, you can abbreviate the genus in speaking about them and people will still understand.

Easier to type, but not easier for everyone to understand what you would be talking about. Might as well just use the common name if it is too much trouble to type out the full genus name.
The abbreviation for species (sp.) used in open nomenclature should still be lower case. Everything else following it is just hobby mumbo jumbo and it doesn't matter if it is capitalized or not.Except when it’s “sp. Area, City, State, Provence, Country”
At the end of the day though, these rules only apply to scientific writing. When writing in informal situations like pet message boards, all that is important is communicating clearly. Everything else doesn't matter.
