Tarantulas on Drugs

Does anyone know what sort of effect smoke from marijuana has on tarantulas? My lovely new neighbors decided to smoke some last night and a couple of my tarantulas started acting weird. My little B. smithi decided to be arboreal by hanging upside down on the lid of its container for over an hour, and my A. metallica started trying to eat its way out of it KK I have it in. I didn't get any pictures unfortunately because I was trying to figure out how to get the smoke smell out of my room and away from my tarantulas (my bedroom doubles as my tarantula room to save space). I opened up a couple windows and turned on a fan, so that seemed to help somewhat, but it didn't get the smell out for a while. Needless to say, I posted a friendly note on my neighbors door telling them if they do this in their apartment again I will call the police. If nothing else and they decide to be stupid again while I'm not around, what would the fastest way to get the smell out be?

As for the smell, just burn a candle.

To be honest, I really don't think that neighbors from an apartment over could have possibly had an effect on your T's. Frankly, I'm shocked you're having an issue with smell. Even if they were in the same room as your T's, I wouldn't be convinced that they were affected by the smoke in the way you're thinking. For one, as you said, we simply don't know the effects on tarantulas. If they were acting weird, I'd bet it's because they may instinctively know "smoke = fire = death, so run!". It sounds like they may have been trying to escape, which is why I have that conclusion. As for them getting high? I'd venture to say impossible, at least in the sense that we know.

This is, of course, assuming this whole thing isn't a coincidence. How many T's do you have? Unfortunately, 2 isn't a very large population to draw any conclusions from. Now, if you have 10 T's and they all acted weird, then I'd be on board. Otherwise? Not too sure.

There is a medicinal card holder in my house and everyone, but me, smokes cigarettes. As far as my personal experience I have not witnessed any ill effects, strange behavior, or molt complications, even if someone comes in my room with a cigarette or there is other smoke in another room in my house. A can of air feshner works to rid smell as well as a candle, although don't apply air freshner above candle. Inscence works great too. I'm not sure if Illinois is a medicinal state, maybe your neighbors have a card.

Your neighbor smoking pot is going to have absolutely zero effect on your tarantulas.

Yeah if it's a neighbor shouldn't cause any problem for your T's, (if yourself/other house mates etc, then it could), crack a window open and things should be ok, I smoke cigarettes in the room but I make sure their is plenty of air between me smoking and my T's.

Yikes, you are overreacting a bit.

The only thing your neighbours' smoking pot is having an affect on is your mental state, for whatever reason.

I can't figure out how the smell would be that strong coming from a whole other unit...

That's what I was wondering. Marijuana has a strong smell, but not that strong. Poor ventilation, perhaps? Shared air ducts?

Tarantulas can only get high if they're arboreal
I agree.

Moving on.. Maybe we shouldnconduct an experiment on the effects of marijuana on tarantulas.. It won't be much of a study but it will be fun. Let's just hope the researchers don't become high first.

I would take into consideration that weed smoking neighbors are far greater then crack heads and jib-techs.

Interesting. I was a bit surprised that they were acting that way because I didn't think any kind of smoke would have that effect since tarantulas don't breathe as often. I did check around and we do share air ducts, so that would partially explain the smell, along with me having the windows/door closed. I also get a really nasty headache whenever I smell weed, so that's never a good time. After lab I stopped by and talked to them about it today and they apologized, saying that they will have a window open next time. I said that if the smell starts to get to me again I'll be sure to have a fan in the room just in case, along with being ready to open a window as well. I'm glad we were able to reach a peaceful compromise because they are nice enough guys. And I suppose that's one way to meet the neighbors.

I do only have 2, EulersK, so that's definitely not a large enough sample, though them trying to escape sounds like a pretty good explanation.

Reading this thread made me think of Half Baked.

"Ever seen a P metallica? Ever seen a P metallica...on weed? That's the way to see one!"

My Smithi used to sometimes hang from the top for days by one leg, and occasionally circumnavigate the cage up there too
