Yes, they can. The idea behind working in the bathtub is to do cage maintenance, transfers, etc in an area where, should the tarantula decide to bolt, it won't have anywhere to immediately hide and go permanently AWOL. Keep a catch cup handy and you'll easily keep an escape situation under control. You don't have to use the bathtub. Any large, flat area, free from clutter and other hiding spots will do. This probably goes without saying, but if you do use the bathtub, make sure you close the drain.

depends on the species and what the bath tub is made of I think.

Thanx for answering my question about the bath guys, I guess what I need to do can wait lol bcoz my obt sling is fast and there are loads of places it could go and I'd lose it if it ran out the bath.

The bath could be ceramic but it think its plastic, only reason I asked that question was that iv seen house spiders tryin to climb the sides and they couldn't, they kept sliding back dwn.

My other half wud freak big time if it escaped so I will leave it for now I think.

Thanx

I can't speak to P. murinus as I've never had one but my Avics and Psalmos are ninja like in their ability to climb out of the bathtub.

if your are talking about your OBT and since he is in a large tank it would be easier just to get a small deli cup and scoop him up in the tank then going through the hassle of using the bath tub.

You really shouldn't have bought an OBT if you can't rehouse a sling. What will you do when it grows up?

Is it useful to have a small container nearby to present an appealing bolt location for runaways, so if they DO go running for the nearest dark/sheltered place they are actually running into an enclosure?

They climb pretty much anything including glass. Why would a tub be any different?

I only asked if they can climb the sides of a bath, I never said I CAN'T rehouse my sling.

I would say any arboreal will have little problem. I'd bet obt would be able to run out. It's still one of the best places to transfer.

You didnt say anything about doing maintenance, it was a simple answer to an unclear question so why throw your dummy out of the pram ?

If you have to put ANY sling into a bath to do ANYTHING then perhaps you should go back to keeping goldfish as you may need a full suit of armour when it gets bigger.
Think about what you want to do, what the spider will probably do and what your reaction is going to be. Think things through and be prepared, its that simple and remember it is a very small spider, not a face eating alien.

Tarantulas are extremely clean animals to keep so apart from removing moults and food bolas when found, there is no need to any 'maintenance' especially on a sling.
If it was an adult and had been in the same tub for a few years then maybe it would need tidying up but that's about it.

I've changed extracted Ts in the tub. I close the bath room door towel the bottom. I have a small dog and the absolute last thing I want is an obt biting him.

So do it how you feel confortable.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with doing cage maintenance or transfers in the bath tub.

I think a lot of ppl on this forum forget the adrenaline involved when you are starting out with those less welcoming species. So I don't think ppl should criticize so much getting a T you might think you can't handle. That can be the appeal. You just need to familiarize yourself with it. I just got a nice set if tongs that puts me at ease removing poo.

Considering that the 'less welcoming species' often have a bite that COULD land a person in the hospital and reflect negatively on the hobby, people here are often quite concerned (and rightfully so) when someone seems ill equipped to handle the species they have chosen. Purchasing one for the adrenaline rush because you don't think you can handle it is the WORST reason to get a T and really irresponsible IMO.

I totally agree with you, but glad that I got species we are probably referring to, whether I was "ready" or not. I give any and all my Ts a ton of respect for both venom and speed. I don't think anyone is ever ready for a Obt type spaz out, but IMO that can be one of the more rewarding experiences of T ownership. I don't wanna come off immature in my comment, but I've really enjoyed Ow's and the antics they bring to the table.
