Tarantula species From Yucatan peninsula Mexico

Hi everybody,

In my trip to the forest (Selva baja) near Mérida, Yucatán,(Mexico) I found this tarantula, is the first time I saw one like this.

Generally in the region only found Brachypelma epicureanum and Brachypelma vagans.

The particularities of this tarantula:
1- have the third segment of is hind leg more thicker than the other segments.
2- in defense position she rise up her abdomen.

Anyone know this specie?

Looks more like a Aphonopelma to me. Aphonopelma do like to raise up thier abdomens. Whatever she is, she is gorgeous, and i would love to have one. Awesome pics!

Looks kind of like Crassicrus lamanai but that's just a quick guess and I usually suck at this game;)

It does looks like old world tarantula from my country, selenocomia javanensis, but that looks more hairy

Zonbonzovi, yeahh is a Crassicus lamanai, thanks very much you own this game =)

Also found an Aphonopelma stoicumlive in Yucatán.
but the one of my pictures is Crassicrus lamnai.

I would agree likely a Crassicrus sp, but the typesite of C.lamanai in north Belize is over 400 km away from Merida, so i dont recommend jumping straight to that species as a foregone conclusion. For one thing, those i've seen of C.lamanai tend to have a very rounded abdomen.

I should say though, fabulous pictures. Really refreshing to have nice overview whole body images, rather than poor photos from 'artistic' angles !

I would be amazed if there was one in the states,I know people had em a few years back but I think all the specimens died.

Well that really sucks. Hard to believe species so close to us, and not around.

I still have a female, I've only heard of a mature male in the U.S. once.

Thanks for the link Chad. Those are some gorgeous spiders. Is there anyone importing any of these? Are they on the CITES list?

Yes is very difficult the ID only by pictures, the rounded abdomen maybe only she doesn't eat for a wile XD i just kidding.

No actually is the frist time I saw one of this tarantulas yes is very nice, and no I only take some pictures for the record and let them go away =)

I havent seen C.lamanai (even) in Europe now for several years. I used to have some of the Belize ones, but my last big female died a couple of years back, and more fool me i dont have any good photos of her.
No, they are not on CITES. That's really a special list for non-brown spiders.


The genus also appears to extends far into Tabasco, Veracruz, Chiapas and Oaxaca Mexico, as well as all across the Yucatan.
However, here's another from Guatemala. You'll notice the hind legs arn't fat.
