So I'm going to post a poll... A little bit just for fun, but obviously honest answers are sought... I love defensive Tarantulas, love Ts that keep you on your toes, the lack of urticating hairs from old worlds is always great.

Before I do the poll I'm gonna say some that I hear a lot are defensive...

Orphnaceus dichromatus
Chilobrachys sp Kaeng Krachan
Cyriopagopus doraie
Cyriopagopus minax
Cyriopagopus lividum
Heteroscodra maculata
Hysterocrates gigas
Lampropelma nigerrium
Ornithonoctinae sp Ho Chi Minh
Psalmopeus irminia
Pterinochilus murinus
Selenocosmia javanensis
Stromatopelma calceatum

These are going to go on the poll and if there is an option available, please add others you find more defensive or which one is the most defensive if it is one of the above species.

I know Ts are individuals like with any animal but let's see what Ts are the most defensive in general. I enjoy the gats defensive species so it may also help me choose another T.

That's if my missus lets me get another one, she isn't keen on them but quite liked the C doraie grown on sling, it's small abd fluffy now though so time will tell if she will still find it cute when it gets big 😂😂

Edit: It seems I couldn't put all of the above in the poll due to limited spaces so state them in the comments after ticking other if they are your most defensive Ts or tick other and state of it is another species not mentioned at all

Pterinochilus murinus was for sure my most defensive species they threat posed the most even when there lid was opened I was greeted. I’ve only kept 4 on this list.
Heteroscodra maculata
Psalmopeus irminia
Pterinochilus murinus
Stromatopelma calceatum (evil 👿)
T stirmi was the meanest It was not an afraid of anything . I had a few obt .. docile as a kitten. 🤣 prob could had pinch grabbed them(but I’d rather not risk getting bitten) Unfortunately they had health problems.
So very individual based temperaments.
Vitalius chromatus was just as angry as any obt I had.

Out of that list I only own P Irmina so I can only review that. Mine is a small juvie, its visible most times I look at it and it hasn’t been defensive to me. My P Rufus, Chilobrachys Huahini and some NW’s, Nhandu coloratovillosus and T Apophysis have stood their ground more.

My huahini never used to stand it's ground it just used to run into its hide. Was a 10 cm female, I ended up moving it on It wasn't the brightest coloured Huahini was more a very drab brown colour. The Irminia I've had were only slings so can't say much about them, they were just FAST 😂😂

Rehousing my C. minax was by far the craziest experience I’ve had in this hobby, she was going nuts, running around and biting everything in sight.

In general and IME, O. sp HCM's default attitude is defensive. The only other species that is comparable IMO is O. sp Vietnam Highland.

Yes I saw a video of someone rehousing one. They don't like to play ball haha. That's one for me to look out for. Have you had Melopeus albistriatus also? Are they like that or more run and hide. I do like a challenge with Ts and always love to add more species.

Should be fun when I get mine in a few days time, it's only a sling though so it will be more fun when it gets to at least Juvie size

The most defensive I had so far was my cambridgei Adult female, it was always out, I could do maintenance quickly most days, but some days she would just go right for my hand, no threat pose or anything, I had to be fast to avoid it and just leave the maintenance until the next day. I know that's likely to change as the ones I've got get bigger. The C schmidti and O sp Ho Chi Minh should be interesting.

I really like my P Irmina. It’s my favourite aboreal. My P Rufus is lightning fast, I sometimes see it at night. I find these Ts much more interesting than Avics 😂

I do, I've never wanted an Avic. Phormingochilus arboricola seems like a nice arboreal, at least to look at it. I hear people never see their P sp Rufus but they are stunning

That sounds more like a strong food response than defensiveness.

Most defensive T I kept was probably phormictopus cancerides.

Sounds like but it wasn't going for the food even when I'd managed to get an adult red runner in there it wouldn't get it for a while but probably just didn't see it go in the speed I had to get it in there with to avoid a bite or her escaping lol, she would always be calm if left for a day or two after that.

I have a Phormictopus that's froggy by nature, but is really the only one that threatened me with any regularity. I think it knows that I prefer arboreals or something, I don't know; it acts like it eats rusty nails for breakfast every morning.

m balfouri flipping on its back threat poses from the day i got it as a sling. b boehmei hair kicker since day 1 over anything never threat poses just kicks hairs always. i count that as defensive since flicking hairs are a defense for nw when they lack the bite of an ow.
