scorpions are terrastrial not aquaritc...why would you give it a pond?? a water dish yes, but as far as i know, they can't swim...just give it a water dish maybe big enough so they can stand in it, and can bathe in it but not deep enough to drown them. my emps love thier water dish i see them in it bathing sometimes :D

I think he wanted to put the pond in for aesthetics :p

I had a small pond in mine, but it ended up getting mucky :(

waterfall is nice though :D

I would hate to ruin your fun but I would not recommend putting a waterfall or pond in there. It adds complications for you and the scorpion and it is an aesthetic for the keeper, and is not really for the scorpion. Although it is unlikely, it is also possible that they could drown. Also, even though it helps with humidity, it is not the kind of environment P. cavimanus would live in, and if you want them to breed, it is best to have an enclosure that replicates the natural environment. But this is just my opinion, and you have a right for your own, of course.;)

ty for the answers yes the pond and waterfall was for looks , what it sounds like to me if i do decide to do this i would have to keep it clean and shallow i was also thinking of adding a filter to pond to keep water clean i dont mind the extra care it will take to keep clean . my goal is to have a pond/watterfall in front a bit and find a way to put a fish in the tank for appearence and if he eats it ok any tips or concerns as i said i am new at owing a scorpion so any info will help thank you

To correct misgiven information, it would actually take your scorpion days to drown as they're able to hold their breath for days, a guy had proven this sometime ago but I don't recall the link.

I still would not recommend putting a waterfall or a pond in the tank though.

If your going to go through all that hassle, why don't you just get a couple fish and put them in a separate tank, and just stick to a small water dish for the scorpion? It does sound like a cool idea, but the bottom line is, having a pond or water fall will add complications and risks, and take up some space the scorpion can use to dig, or just walk around.

If you want to use a big water dish, you could always fill it most of the way with pebbles/small rocks, and still have the illusion of a pond, sorta. I wouldn't bother with running water, though...

And no, they can't even float, let alone swim. Exo's too dense and they breathe from their underside.

I'd also go with a filled waterdish......Scorpions aren't as cool as Discovery tells us. They also do stupid things....Just as the intelligence of dolphins and whales is terribly overrated (I mean, they can't be very intelligent if they don't even know the difference between the beach and the ocean :D), this is also the case with some behaviours of scorpions. I.e. Many of you keep emps, ever seen one flee into a large waterbowl and submerge themselves? They can stay submerged like that for a couple of hours, yet they can also drown in it????

Michiel, do you think there could be a reason for that? Not trying to defend emperors though.:D

A reason for what precisely? "the submerging behaviour" is a kind of defensive behaviour. Heterometrus spp also been known to submerge themselves as a defensive measure to threats....

Yep, that was my question. Just thought it was interesting that they did this and some of the other stuff they do.;)
