Along with H. maculata, and the Poecilotheria genus, I think this is one of the best looking tarantulas around, hard to decide between this and H. maculata.

The genus Stromatopelma comprise 4 species (plus one subspecies S. calceatum griseipes). IMO is only 1 species in the hobby S. calceatum.
This are the species of this genus:
  • S. batesi (POCOCK, 1902)
  • S. calceatum calceatum (FABRICIUS, 1793)
    • S. calceatum griseipes (POCOCK, 1897)
  • S. fumigatum (POCOCK, 1899)
  • S. satanas (BERLAND, 1917)
Hope this helps.
This is going to sound funny, but I remember reading that S. satanas may be extinct due to habit loss :( I have no idea if anybody has done research on them recently though.

I believe, that nobody has seen them since 1917 ... Well maybe not that long, but very long time.
Except for the locals if it is still living there.

Hi,

there is only the holotype known from this species. Maybe the females dont looks like the male in colour. Maybe S. satanas is just the male of a other known Stromatopelma species. ;)
There are rumour about a blueish Stromatopelma species, maybe this species is still existing.

Hi,

So your saying that the holotype of S. satanas is a male..?
Is it still a valid species in that case? how long until the species is declared extinct/gone..?

Stromatopelma metallica then ? :D
Do you have the locality where this spider might be ? I suppose west central Africa or something like that.

Man, this thread needs a bump, and fast! S. calceatum is, IMHO, one of the nicest looking and interesting species in the hobby today. Here's some pics from a recent rehousing adventure.

The feathers of the Featherleg:

Some action shots:

The last photo in the above sequence was taken a fraction of a second before the T jumped right off the branch. Too bad I missed the moment... :wall: Stromatopelma in flight... that would've been something else!

Cheers,
L
