Hey all,

From the quick googling I tried while at work, the only information I could find on these guys was a listing on the WSC. Does anyone have pictures of one or know of any paper detailing their ecology? It seems that little is known about Stromatopelma in general because of their distribution among politically unstable regions. Obviously, they aren't in the trade, I'm just curious to learn a little more about other Stromatopelma species.

Thanks!

This might be of interest to you if you're curious about Stromatopelma habitat and whatnot generally:

If you have a WSC account you can try reading the actual scientific papers on S. satanas... probably the only way you're realistically going to find out much more about such an obscure species. Hope your French is decent!

I dont believe they are available in the hobby....at least not in the US.

Well that's just not true at all, calceatum has been in the hobby seemingly forever. They are possibly the single most advanced species on the planet, right there with H. macs.

They are extremely high strung, very very fast, and tend to be very reclusive. They're also quite beautiful when you get to see them. Very easily bred and therefore very inexpensive to buy even though you don't see them very often, at least not as often as the H. mac. Definitely one of the more unpredictable spiders out there.

It might interesting for you to learn that a black Stromatopelma has been introduced in a few European collections. Not bred yet to my knowledge. I won't post any pictures as I dont own them, but the spiders are very nice looking. Like black and charcoal Poecilotheria.

Originally named satanas. But some believe fumigatum is a more accurate label based on location collection. So perhaps cf. satanas or fumigatum is most accurate for now.

@cold blood learned that on Facebook. Lots of Milwaukee keepers there know you ;)

You can always post links to the pictures. I couldn't find any pictures of a black Stromatopelma sp., but then again, I'm not on Facebook or any other social media sites where those pictures might be hiding.

Unfortunately I only have a screenshot of the spider.

I mean, I could email it to anyone seriously interested.

I don't think @Venom1080 is around here all to often anymore. Sadly, I believe he left the hobby when he moved. I found this exact thread when I was looking for pictures of Stromatopelma cf satanas in captivity. He shared the screenshot with me then, I'll send it through a DM here on AB.

Any updates on these guys or other species of this genus? Have any collections and/or legal exports been possible yet?

A very cool genus!

Would you mind sharing with me as well? As an s. calceatum owner, I'm interested in the species. Thank you.
