Sri lankan ornamental (Poecilotheria ornata) or (Poecilotheria fasciata)

both very nice Ts and one of the bigger Poecilotheria species :)

these are only guesses because common names especialy in the hands of pet shop owners can be very miss leading

Well, i feel kind of silly correcting a common name but "Sri Lankan Ornamental" refers to P. fasciata. At least from what I have seen.

Take care. :)

one thing is that they dont sell t's with enough venom to kill us or dogs i think but im not sure cause when people get bit by a pokie iv herd u might be out for a week but its not life thretening. but im not sure about dogs if they would be thertened. but the only reson it would bite it is if its bothering the t. but im not sure.

^^^

put it this way it could easily knock you out , so chances are itcould do a bit of damage on your dog..

but if you feel uncomfortable about maybe avoid it. It is in no way a species for amatuers.... or so ive been told..

i read an interesting story once about a peocilotheria bite.. ill go find the link an pst it here in a bit

i have been told that having an obt is worse then having a pokie. but i think thats wrong since pokies are more vemomous then obts i think. but i think having a pokie is the risk of it running out when u have the lid off. so i think if u want it u have to be ready just incase it runs away lol. so i think having a pokie is worse then having an obt

If you live in Malaysia, you have native, wild inverts that would rival (or beat) the effects of a pokie bite.

Pterinochilus murinus "red colour form" in my experience are more aggresive than Poecilotheria species and there are much faster spiders out there than any of the "pokies" the only pokie i have found to be even remotely aggresive was P.ornata.

thats my experience but im not saying thats gospel for all pokies

Aggresiveness aside the pokies are worse for their more potent venom. Id rather be bitten by an obt over a pokie anyday of the week.

So is this something you know from personal experince or are you just making a guess by what you have heard or read? Greg

this is all speculation regarding T venoms. not enough research has been done on tarantula venom to make these sort of comments. pokies dont deserve there reputation as far as aggresion is concerned though.

okey guys after reading this thread, it gets a lil confusing, i wanna try to striaght things out, thats why i hate using common names, people tend to make up diff common names , it irates me so bad.

first off;
the sri lankan ornamental is Poecilotheria fasciata.

fringed ornamental is Poecilotheria ornata.

indian ornamental is Poecilotheria regalis.

oh and another thing, i dont think it would kill your dog.
