Yikes, fellas!
I happen to agree with your views completely...but this kind of public response just gives the phobic a**munches that caused this to happen in the first place, another reason to believe that tarantula owners are dangerous extremists who must be stopped..."for the children's sake". Get my drift? We need to appear as the educated, decent people that we are. Only that will get through to the lilly livered, spineless pansies that make the local ordinances...
Don't get mad - get EVEN. Take their jobs away..vote them out.

BTW: I live in Michigan. Militia, anyone.........? Hehehehe{D

i understand but this wasn't created to eventually have our lives micromanaged by any govt we have a republic not a mobacracy its meant to protect individual rights not majority rights. i don't care if someone is dumb enough to think tarantulas are going to kill them so i must sacrifice my hobby.

Too bad our govmnt. seems to have forgotten the recipe for freedom, huh? Maybe we should start a letter writing campaign to this City Council, and force them to expose their own lack of understanding of the laws as set forth by this Original Standard? I agree absolutely that we should be able to own what we want, on property we own and pay taxes for. Provided that we don't misuse our freedoms to hurt the things and people we are supposed to be looking after.....
My guns, my Pitbull and my tarantulas are my responsibility. It's my right to own them and it's also my right; under the fine document that you've just reminded us of; to be left alone about them, from pushy, overbearing lawmakers and neighbors. Otherwise - why did we bother to make our own country and laws in the first place?

If overbearing neighbors can force new laws...then I hereby officially and publicly declare my deep seated and overwhelming fear of pink plastic flamingos. They should be outlawed immediately. They give me the willies.....

this is BS. I know how they feel I had to get rid of my baby american alligator because of stupid laws. and they say once my snake hits 5 ft. he has to go. what next?

I also tried to post a comment, which never showed up. After looking through the city codes, I have yet to see where they have defined Ts as a dangerous animal. I checked our local codes, and they only include wild cat and dog species, including foxes, coyotes, etc. as wild animals. I would like to see them justify taking my Ts and scorpions into custody.

Sorry! After more digging, I did find the ordinance.
"Dangerous animal" means and includes any animal which is not naturally tamed or gentle; or which is of a wild nature or disposition; or which is capable of killing or inflicting serious injury upon human beings and having known tendencies, individually or as a species, to do so; or which, because of its size or other characteristics, would constitute a danger to human life or property if it is not kept or maintained in a safe manner or in secure quarters, including, but not limited to, the following animals, which shall be deemed as dangerous per se:

Bears, wolves, wolf hybrid dogs, foxes, coyotes; lions, tigers, panthers, lynx, bobcats, elephants, bison, poisonous snakes and spiders, alligators, crocodiles, anacondas, pythons, boa constrictors, and piranhas.

Doesn't that also include ALL lizards, rats, mice, and birds, which are also not naturally tamed and gentle, but have become so over many years of keeping just like captive bred tarantulas? I have had much worse bites from my rats and cockatiels than my Ts could ever inflict.
