Hi everyone :)

Just watched BICS's video on spider beetles. Anyone keep these or know where to get some? They look pretty cool and easy to keep.

If they can't climb plastic/glass then they shouldn't be able to get out either.

Wow, that was cool.

I've actually been looking for small feeders for young salamanders, and I read (in a book authored by none other than Frank Indiviglio) that small beetles and their larvae make up a large portion of the diets of some salamander species.

I saw the video and wondered how easy it would be to have a colony of those to use as feeders.

These beetles may work for that :) You could also try baby or dwarf isopods. They are easy to breed :)

No one knows how to get any of these? My books say they are worldwide so I am guessing they should live here in Michigan.

Maybe I could just set out some oats or fruit or something?

I've only stumbled across one, it was in my cousin's bathroom. The best way to get some may be to tell people you know you want them and hopefully someone will have a population in their pantry. The downside of this strategy, besides its uncertainty, is that you may get an even stranger reputation! :p

If we were that worried about what others thought of us then we all picked the wrong hobby :sarcasm:  ;) :p

I wonder if I set an open thing of oats outside for a while if some would come?

If you already have them in your house that might work. And keep an eye on every new grain product/book/cardboard box you buy.

I managed to buy some somewhere ;) I should get them this coming week.

I will keep my eyes out for wild ones. I may put some apple and oats outside and see if something comes to them after a few days. Sometimes I see little tiny beetles on them but I don't think they were spider beetles.
