I am going to design and build a vivarium from scratch for a recent capture of a Menemerus bivittatus (Grey Wall Jumper), I've named him Wally.
I have seen several of this species where I live, so the species specific vivarium ought to be well used over time.

If Arachnoboards Admin allow it, this thread will be a Work In Progress (WIP). Showing my steps, over time, on how I am going with this project. Inviting others on this board to feel free to constructive comments, tips, ideas, questions and the like.

For starters, as its common name signifies, this Grey Wall Jumping (GWJ) spider mainly hunts on walls, which also includes tree trunks and such. Because the GWJ has become cosmopolitan, it is often found where people live, and on, and/or in, human built structures. Wally was first sited on my sun lit bedroom wall. He is only 6mm (1/4 inch) in size, so the vivarium won't be a large size. My main feature of this vivarium will be a wall. Perhaps three walls (back and two sides), but definitely a back wall, for Wally to feel at home on. At the moment, Wally is in my Holding Jar, and he has trouble climbing up the glass enclosure, as a result, he spends nearly all its time on ground level, and in the hollow I made for him.

Just letting you know that some updates may take a while to get posted, depending on availability and arrival of sourced items, and personal capabilities.

I look forward to updates. You have inspired me to search for, and care for, some of the jumping spiders that I see around my house. I'm going to work on an enclosure over the next few days.

I have recently been using a mind-mapping software. It really suits my way of thinking due to the way our mind uses engrams (memory tracing). Notice how sometimes it takes a while to recall something to mind, it's because the mind uses association methods to build up a memory, much like following a paper trail. I am finding this software very helpful to sort out the finer details from ideas. You may find posted samples of this in this thread. If you interested to find out more about it, check the website that specializes in it at Mind Map Soft

Note: the taxonomy of spiders are often shown on such maps.

The main purpose of a vivarium is to a 'vivarium (Latin, literally for "place of life"; plural: vivaria or vivariums) is an area, usually enclosed, for keeping and raising animals or plants for observation or research. Often, a portion of the ecosystem for a particular species is simulated on a smaller scale, with controls for environmental conditions'.

These are my current points of consideration:
Wall Jumper vivarium design draft 3.JPG

Note: any of the shown nodes, by the software, can be expanded, adding new branches, etc. where further details can be worked out.

Below is an expansion of the HABITAT node.

I love how you described the spider as "cosmopolitan." I immediately thought of a tiny model city in there and he could be the giant spider stomping on it! The thought made me smile. I have a weird sense of humor and perhaps he has delusions of grandeur. lol

Hope so too.
About half of my school mates have passed away before reaching retirement age. If you get there, consider yourself lucky.
That's kinda sad to hear... Well, I'm glad you're enjoying your retirement and it's great to see all your wonderful creations ! Keep it coming... :)

ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING FOR THOSE DARK TIMES
I want the vivarium to be lit as close to real life as I can while the vivarium stays indoors.
I've complicated it somewhat by wanting moon light as well. The moon computer turns of the moon light LEDs whenever the moon rises, regardless if the moon rises in the day or night. I find it useless to have it on by day when there is good sunlight shining through the window. My goal is to have artificial lighting for the vivarium while outdoor lighting conditions, day or moonlight, are lacking.

The other problem is, how much light is daylight and moonlight.
Lux (Latin for light), is a unit for measuring light intensity. One lux is one lumen per square metre.
Below shows the difference in lux between day and moon lighting; it's quite drastic in the comparisons. There really is not much moonlight in terms of lux.

Using the above as a guideline, I've put together what I am aiming to create for the vivarium. The following min-map shows the operating outline.
A few clarifications:
sensor = used is a Light Dependent Resistor (LDR). Circuits for these will be home made. When tested and built, their details will be posted here.
enabled = ready to go ON as soon as something else triggers it, such as a relay.

Complicated stuff haha!

I did noticed the sponge. Just a hardcore harborer of bacteria and could easily ruin all your hard work in creating a "perfect" vivarium.

I'd scrap it.

Thanks for info. At the moment I wish to avoid spray misting. I'll keep the sponges in the Holding Jars for they are only temporary. Your post has added a new consideration for me, and as a result will replace the sponges on a weekly basis.
