Something is wrong with my mealworms colony..

I was trying to raise a colony of mealworms, but got an issue that most of the beetles just start laying on their backs and helplessly squirm around. If I try to flip them over they stumble and roll over again. I thought that it's their food that causes it, but I'm feeding them the same kind of vegetables and fruits I feed my cockroaches, and they seem to be fine. What can cause this?

They may be the world's clumsiest beetles, but eventually they get themselves right-side-up again. I put a piece of egg crate in there and they seem to be all over it.

Seems like evolutionary adaptation for certain terrains. Take your average monster truck and put it on a winding mountain road. Eventually it ends up on it's back with it's feet in the air, helplessly squirming around. ;)

I think that there's actually some problem with oatmeal they live in. Not only that they can't get up, some of them have died. I guess it was a bad experiment for me.

I've been using chicken feed. I had some left over for crickets. I wouldn't think oatmeal would be a problem though. Mealworms are usually sold in an oat or bran medium.

Well, both bran and oat are the only food I don't give to my roaches. And I've noticed that on the side of their container where I keep fruits and vegetables (they're laying on a paper towel) beetles look much better, moving fine, no twitching. Either the dust from bran make their breathing harder or there might be pesticides or something

Once my original colony of mealworms started turning into beetles, it took at least a month before I started seeing babies. Maybe just give it more time. I started with 30 mealworms back in December, and this is the colony now.

Well I have a colony for a month and I only see dead beetles so there's obviously something wrong

At least your roaches are going well. Roaches are effective feeders for pretty much anything. I get the same results with lateralis roaches that you're get with mealworms. Just raise whichever feeder does best for you.

I don't even know right now should I give up the colony and repurpose their container for anything else or try again?
I think you should try again. I had to restart my Darkling Beetle Colony and the first try didn’t work out but the second one did, and now I should have tiny mealworms very soon. Sometimes it takes a little bit to get a colony up and running and that’s okay
