So you have 500 slings. What then?

Ok so my question is if you end up with 500 slings what do you do with them.
I bet 99.9 % of you are going to say. SELL THEM!
How do I go about doing that. Getting buyers, shipping them etc etc etc

No no no, you send them to @magicmed ;)

You can make posts in the classifieds, or sell them all or most to a wholesaler. I know there's always a couple looking to buy large lots of slings on here. I would ask how the wholesaler would prefer them shipped.

Good luck :)

OP is in South Africa its going to be a bit harder for them with SA's strict invert laws.

Ah my bad I didn't look at your profile, I figured you were in the states. In that case I hope you find someone that can help out in finding them all homes :)

G. Pulchripes.
If I had a male for her I'd breed my LP as well but guess who can't find one.

Are you aware of the potential sac size of LPs? Are you aware that the resulting slings will be virtually worthless as a result of ease of breeding and monster sac sizes? The hobby always needs ts, but there are some species specific exceptions, those are the ones that constantly see the market flooded....LP is the champion of that consistently flooded market list.

Yeah. I am aware of that. And with the south African market being what it is I don't think I'd really breed my LP. The G. Pulchripes on the other hand is quite popular and finding a mating pair of my dream T (H. Lividum) is sadly almost nonexistent. Same goes for the red rump, pumpkin patch. I've seen one Togo starburst in 6 months. So breeding the more "beautiful" and "rare" spiders will be difficult

If you would mate your LP...the title of this thread would be '1000 slings...now what? ' :D

all this talk about sac size makes me wonder if I haven't stumbled onto a porn site by mistake.

Trust me I don't have nearly enough patience for that. The title would've been "if you pay for packaging I'll send you 1000 LP's"

You sir have a dirty mind.
Makes life more fun doesn't it ;)

You can ask Rozanne from rozzers tarantuals.

Email:
rozanne.schnetler@gmail.com

Or other breeders such as:
Tarantula cafe:
http://www.tarantulacafe.co.za/

Petbugs:
http://www.petbugs.co.za/

The best will be to sell them wholesale to a breeder. Don't expect to get much though. The invert keeping hobby is quite small in SA and therefore slings of a tarantula species abundant in our hobby is rather difficult to sell off even at cheap prices.

And where do you buy your Ts from? H. Macs are rather popular in SA and I have seen them for sale countless times by breeders. I even encountered females for sale twice in a LPS. Rozanne recently had a mature female H. Lividum for sale, and petbugs has slings of the species available, so buying a few slings, chances are good you'll end up with a few males. Rozanne also has a mature female H. Mac for sale. Just regularly check the breeders websites.

But please gain experience before you breed, there is a lot more to breeding than just putting two Ts of the same species and opposite genders together. You need to know how, when and the different environmental requirements. And you need to know how you'll sell off the slings when you obtain a healthy sac. Experience is key, so it's best you learn how to keep different species 1st before you attempt to breed them.

If you want to breed a certain species, gain experience on how to keep it acordingly, buy a few slings, keep the females and sell off the males. Raise females to adulthood, then buy another batch of slings of the same species, this time you seek out the males and sell the females. Those males you use to breed with your female once they are mature.

That is top advice to any keepers that wish to start breeding.

P.S. is there a chance that seeing as you are in SA that you can breed some Harpactira namaquensis and get them to Europe please???:hungry::hungry::hungry:

.. I joke..

.. No but seriously :p

I was puking rainbows while reading your post. Thanks a lot. This really helped with a lot of information. Couldn't ask for a better reply. You've stated everything so clearly I can't even come up with a question.

Nope, unfortunately not. You need a permit to keep indigenous species. I don't have a permit at the moment, but am looking to obtain some in the future when I have sorted out my life a little bit. Any genus that has species indigenous to SA are illegal to keep without permit, except for Harpactirella spp.

You need a permit for every illegal specie you want to keep and then you need an additional permit for every illegal specie you want to breed, and it's not easy to obtain these permits.

As far as importing and exporting goes, importing any arachnids are impossible, why our SA hobby grows so slow, any new species that does get over our borders, does so undetected and illegally. I think the same thing goes for exporting.
