As for a hide, I glued two pieces of cork bark together, (hot glue gun). It resembles a hallow log, but tapers down, so that the bottom is somewhat sealed. Take a look at RobC's tutorials. He has many fine examples of this.

Don't let all of this scare you into not getting one. I really like my female. One just needs to respect their abilities and keep them in mind when doing any kind of maintenance. As long as I don't chase her, when she runs to her hide, I don't have any issues.

Predictable, yet the opposite of everything else I've read about them:?
I'm speaking from personal experience. All of my pokies have all been pretty predictable, especially once they're no longer slings. Slings do run, but most things that size do. Once mine have hit the 2" mark, they don't really do a whole lot of running. That isn't to say they won't take advantage of an open container, but from what I've dealt with, they'd rather stand and fight their ground rather than run away. Maybe I've just been lucky.
