I kinda do like the A. purpurea, the strong purples and blues are what are such a draw. I like the way they sound and considering they are arboreal I probably don't want to handle to frequently if it can be avoided... As the whole "teleporting" thing is going to scare the living h*ll out of me. Anything else that can be said about them? I know avics are pretty mellow though. So costs?

Ask BrettG - he for example, breeds them ;)

If you want purple A.purpurea is the way to go.They CAN be a little"snappy" at times but have a pretty level temperament for the most part. That said, our classifieds section is a great place to find a dealer that has these guys in stock. I can assure you there is no shortage of them in the US.

not likely to chew my arm off should I simply open the cage
No tarantula is likely to chew your arm off if you simply open the cage. Some posters on this forum are just ever so slightly melodramatic :)

Great to know, I will have a peek and see what can be done. Thanks a lot Brett :)

I said it more along the lines of a joke. I am rather cautious as a whole so that wouldn't be an issue. I just thought it was funny and would adequately get my point across while still being silly, lol I'm just that kind of person :).

How are purpureas in Europe, by the way? We're practically neighbours xD
Most breeders here have either A.versi, A.avic or some obscure "sp." but I'd eventually like to get a purpurea if I ever get to expand (Happy with four so far)

Personally, I get my Avics usually from a certain breeder over here since she's specialized on them, but she doesn't set EU wide asfaik. You could try M. Scheller, though. They are usually around 10-12 EUR per sling (depending on size / instar)

I asked a T owner who lives in the area if they had a breeder they would recommend for a A. Purpurea. We will see what happens because I don't like shipping animals and if I can avoid it then you bet I will! We will see what turns up though.

Avicularia are a good way to prepare yourself for other tarantulas. some can be nervous but most are handleable and only give their owners grief being poop cannons. i wouldn't worry too much about it.

the biggest thing you should concern yourself with is the fact you are most likely going to buy a sling if you go with A. purpurea instead of, say A. urticans or A. metallica because of price. adult A. purpurea are not cheap. do your homework about raising Avic slings, stay diligent and find a lot of different credible sources rather than just one person's experiences keeping them. a lot of people would consider very small (like 3i etc.) Avics "die-y". i've personally had a bit of grief trying to keep very young ones, but if you really look into some good methods for keeping them or buy a juvie you should be fine.

If price is something to worry about with them I would actually save to get a juvi. I don't mind my G. Pulchripes sling or the B. Vagans but if they are a little more fragile I would rather start at a moderate age and go from there.... I will look at prices when I find a good source.

And as far as researching properly are there any websites you recommend? I look online a lot and there is quite a bit of conflicting information interspersed with information that matches what I see elsewhere.

Avics are not anymore fragile than other slings in my personal experience.

As per your question, you'd probably want to search on the forum right here for their care. There are dozens of threads regarding them in general and you shouldn't have any trouble finding them.

Avic purpurea is arboreal. The only reason she was down on the substrate is that is where I took the pic right after re-housing her. They are not crazy expensive but are rather difficult to find.
