Neat! I take it they probably breed readily in captivity but no one bothers to?

Bingo.
More over, it seems that alot of gravid females are collected and if you get them in mid summer they will most probably lay a few eggs. The babies hatch out into brilliant green worms that readily feed on pinheads and 1/8 crickets.

TOTALLY underrated species. I'm a bit biased as someone who's prone to loving green arboreals.

why dont you just go catch yourself a coluber constrictor mormon. they are very common and can do very well in captivity. they are super cool and dont get too big.

dtknow, what part of CA are you from? I am ordering some pretty soon. The guy owes me a scarlet kingsnake, so as soon as he have my scarlet king, he's going to ship my rough green out along with the scarlets.

I 2nd the rough green snake. I had one for 3yrs before I sold the terrarium it was in. Which included, killi fish, mantella frogs, and flying geckos. None of them bothered eachother. The green snake would come out of my umbrella plant slowly teetering back and forth, disguising itself like a twig moving with the wind until it would spring forward and roll in a ball around the cricket. It would sleep in a ball about 1/2 the size of a que ball in the crotch of some bark I had on the background. I really miss keeping those guys there awesome. Never could find them CB.

I did set up a large (660gal equivelent) display case about 7' tall with 2 med-large sized ficus to attempt breeding. I had heard that in order for the female to become receptive, males needed to fight in the trees. The one who would fall to the ground lost and the other would proceed with the female. If anyone else has heard this lmk.

My second suggestion would be a mandarin rat snake, they're gorgeous.http://farm1.static.flickr.com/103/290525732_75378d6a5a.jpg?v=0

ummm, why did you sell off your terrarium?

sounded like you had a good setup with some pretty cool inhabitants.

This is a good start...

Your backyard should have variety of RosyBoas! The best overall snake....

Rough greens are easily bred and eat INSECTS, wax worms & crickets! Jason

Moved to florida. It was a 65g oceanic terrarium. Everything I was taking was going in a trailer. It wouldn't of been safe. It was awesome though. I had a habba mister mounted in a storage room (cause theyre loud) on a timer as well as 4 phase lighting, live moss, bromeliads, stream, etc. I don't want to jack this thread. I'll find my pics and post it approprietly. D

Josh r: They are beautiful snakes(very similar in coloration to rough greens actually...first time I saw one periscope up in a brushpile thats what I thought). But apparently can get just as big as other racers.(tho most I have caught were less than 3 feet). We kept some briefly in captivity and I think they would need a pretty decent size enclosure(20 gal long at the least) to feel comfortable. I think in a setup I'm thinking of they'd end up with a bad case of nose rub. Also, would rather not deal with CA Dept of F&G rules if I don't have to.

Kyuzo: I am in LB

Rosies are cute but not quite what I am looking for.

Ok, does anyone know if Dasypeltis are still coming in, or if anyone has been producing them regularly?(easy enough to keep and breed apparently but not much interest due to feeding most likely).

Thanks! They seem like they'd make ideal/very interesting captives.

Yes, they are still being imported. I believe Tom Crutchfield has a pair for sale on kingsnake.com

i'll go with the Durango kingsnake that is currently up for sale ;). stay relative small and active.
Mine hides and only comes out once in a blue moon lol. I prefer my black milksnake over anything and well worth saving up for her. <3<3<3

I think I'll have to suggest the African House snake. They originate from Africa (obvious lol) and are very interesting to watch (and very prolific lol)

EDIT: Well dangit this is LeilaNami again

I would suggest one of the many garter snakes on the market...stunning color and always active.

Yeah. T. s. concinnus has caught my eye. Oddly enough not many breeders work with them.

UJ: I saw the pair of red eggies but $295 pr is too much. I don't need my eggeaters to be anything more than standard scabra(which I recall used to cost something along the line of 30-$45...must be the wrong time of year?

Are trinket snakes(Elaphe helena) at all common? Seem like a "mini radiated rat".

Another thing I might add is that I do not need whatever it is to be dog tame...bluffing and being overall unpleasant is fine by me(and makes life a bit more interesting). I find threat displays quite fascinating actually.

i used to own a garter snake, and when it was feeding time i used to put small bowls with feeder fish into his cage, i used to keep him in a 10 gallon. but those fish were his favorite, and i loved watching him eat them... and he did try biting me.... once.... but he was too small lol
