Small water bowls/containers

Hello everyone,

I introduced myself over a year ago but never posted. I didn't own a tarantula till about two weeks ago. Now I have over 10 (A. seemani, B. emilia, B. albopilosum, P. scrofa, P. parvula, G. rosea, A. avicularia) of them in varying sizes. They all came in those deli cups and I need to rehouse them. I was very fortunate and found some clear plastic containers with screw on caps (wide mouths, about 4 inches). I filled them with coco fiber (eco earth) and that is where is I stuck.

I have been trolling the boards and Youtube with no results. Though I have to admit, I have learned ALOT doing that. I need to find small water containers/bowls that I can put in the tarantulas containers. I have included a picture of the container so you can get an idea of what I am working with.

Thanks in advance,

Peter

Hmm. A lot to say there..but first, while I can't totally tell, it seems like that jar might be too small for your B. albopilosum. Also, as slings, most will tend to burrow (except your Avic of course), so you may want to give them more substrate. I dont' typically give water dishes to anything under two inches in leg span, a light spray on the side of the container and into the substrate every now and then is just fine for tiny ones. Otherwise, I use bottle caps for water dishes. Bottle caps from plastic water bottles work well, or milk caps, just wash them out first. If you fill the container up almost all the way with dirt, you don't need to provide a hide for the smaller ones as they will just dig a hole. Your Avic should have a tall-ish container with a piece of bark or a silk plant, something to anchor webbing from. The container you have there would be great for something a little smaller, with some more dirt in it. :) I can't really tell how big your spiders are, but if they are an inch or less, Thornton Plastics sells vials that work great, and a lot of mine are kept in them. Deli cups from your grocery store or local take out restaurant work great for ones that are a little bigger. The Container Store sells cubes and stackable acrylic boxes of all shapes and sizes for even larger ones. Or you could just go to PetCo and get some kritter keepers, they come in all different sizes as well. Just make sure your spiders can't fit through the ventilation holes. :)

I wouldn't say the container is perilously too small, but I agree with the assessment that more substrate would help. As far as a water dish goes, usually around 1.5-2" is when I start giving a typical screw off bottle cap from a soda with water.

I also agree on more sub as well as your albo looks pretty big for the jar. I only have 1 t ovr 2in and i use a bottle cap from a tea bottle (little wider and deeper so holds more water for my 3-4" girl) but you can buy one if you realy want jamie sell one lil bigger then cap but ofc for 10 the shipping would cost as much as items xc is say go to the store and browse the plastics/tote isle and find some nice sized for your bigger t's make sure its 3x dls

Thanks for the replies. It seems that bottle caps and tea (or any wider mouth drink will do).

Your comments about the container size alarmed me. I had read on this forum (and saw on Youtube ) that they need to tight (about 2 or 2.5 times their leg span. You will see form the pics below that I may need a smaller space for the B. emilia and the N. chromatus, but I thought the B. albopilosum was spot on until the next molt or two. I have posted a top view pic for better perspective. If the consensus is still too small I can change it immediately I have lots of containers.

Alltheworld: Thanks for the tip on Thornton and The Container Store. I have one about three miles from work and I will be stopping there soon. Once I lock down the container size which I thought I had.

Lord an pyro: Thanks, I also didn't know about not putting a water bowl for anything less than 1-2 inches (leg span I assume).

Viper: Did plenty of searches (read over 100 posts, I hate to be the guy to ask the same question for the 100th time) and I never saw or read what people were putting in vials or small containers.

Please check out the pics below and give me your feed back on the size container. I am a little concerned now, again thanks to all!

Peace

The emilia could use a smaller home, it has a bit too much room IMO. The P. scrofa and the B. albo need more room and a hide. I would at least offer something to all of them, for the small ones it can be something as trivial as a leaf (real or plastic), for the larger ones a piece of wood or bark or something to get comfy in, under or up against.

Also the dollar store sells a wide variety of containers suitable for t's, especially smaller ones.

I use several sizes of plastic water bowls. For slings (2nd instar and up) I use the lids from 16 oz water bottles. They come in two depths, shallow and deep; I use the shallow ones far more often. When they outgrow those, I give them 1 oz souffle cups (purchased by the sleeve); these are typically used in 7 qt shoebox-size cages. For anything in a sweater box or larger cage (15 qt to 64 qt) I use 3 oz souffle cups (also purchased by the sleeve). When these get fouled by feces, boluses, dead crickets, etc, I throw them out and replace with a new one.

For slings that are too small for water bottle lids, I put some in long fiber spagnum and mist that once a week or so.

I'd get a larger enclosure for the B albo. The first picture looked okay, the top down makes it a bit more obvious.

IMO, scrofa and albo are in containers too small. Will they live in those containers, Yes. Are they optimum IME, No. I'd put those two in at least KKs in terms of floor space, and a lot of substrate so they don't fall too far (see Exo Terra's Breeder Boxes for a good commercial set up) Alternatively to save on sub, you can fill the bottom with something like plastic containers at the dollar store to take up the volume, but allow enough so they can burrow if they desire.

I understand; searching isn't rocket science. All one needs is time and patience, and if you own Ts, then you have both! >>>> http://www.arachnoboards.com/ab/showthread.php?255957-New-water-dishes

This one below I found by searching via google, again TIME and PATIENCE

Viper69, quote of the day, priceless!

Thanks for the advice on the albo and scrofa. I will upgrade soon. I saw a Youtube video by tarantulaguy1976 who used a shoe from the container store. A KK is easier and cheaper, but I like the hinged door, though the draw back is that the hinged door is in the front and it is deep so cleaning could be a pain. I have a wholesale account at the local pet supplier, but they don't carry exo-terra. The have the breeder boxes ranging $8-14. I am going to explore a few more options and if I discover something new I will promptly contribute to the collective knowledge of the forum.

I had to read and re-read you comment about putting a container inside the container. I didn't see it at first but it makes sense.

Poec54: Thanks for the information, very useful.

Lordwaffle et al: thanks for the kind words about the albo, I went through about 2 dozen to pick it (I have no idea about gender, that will be next step after I get basic husbandry down.

Litebrite: I would love to see a picture of that, if possible.

Based on all the the posts I have read, I ordered The Tarantula Keeper's Guide. I look forward to that.

Thanks for the advice and kind words.

Peace.

Thanks. Feel free to put that quote of mine in your signature file if you like. As for Breeder Boxes, those are Exo Terra, and those are the cheapest prices I've seen for them at your store, quite lucky.
