Small invert that is affordable (Under $50), and interesting.

I was going to get one but decided against it since they are bottomless pits for life. Iirc they need a 10g tank but I could be wrong. Been awhile since I read on them.

You could get a praying mantis, awesome creatures, cheap and easy to keep. A pet shop down my road sell's them for £9.00 (not sure what that is in dollars) so yeah well under $50. most are very resilient to different temperatures and humidities so unless you live in a desert or a blizzard it won't need heating, all it needs is food (crickets) and climbing space. Of course a few need a little extra humidity and heat like orchid mantids and ghost mantids but most that You will come across will be very easy to care for.
The only negative is that they don't live that long so I suppose instead you could get an arboreal tarantula, A. Avicularia (Pinktoe tarantula) are perfect for beginners due to good temperament, smallish size and being fine in room temperatures and humidities however It's a good idea to give the enclosure a mist a week or so as they like a bit of moisture.
Both are exciting and awesome pets, mantis have short lives, tarantulas have big fangs. whichever seems better for you :p

Or you could get a frog I guess but I got a pond so I find them not quite as exciting.

An 8" x 8" x 8" container is about perfect for a dwarf tarantula. They may be diminutive, but many are just stunning to behold. Can't go wrong with a Cyriocosmus (elegans, ritae) or Hapalopus sp. 'Columbia', aka the pumpkin patch tarantula already mentioned. But also as mentioned, I'm not sure what the price would be for an adult/subadult of any of those in the States.

Alternatively, I'd want to take advantage of the water tightness of the terrarium and catch a small fishing spider from somewhere.

Edit - also just noticed that I've bumped a two-week inactive thread. Quinquangular, what did you go for in the end?
