Slayer Guitarist Jeff Hanneman Dies of Liver Failure After Spider Bite

The title of this article is misleading, because it implies that the liver failure was caused by a spider bite (that occurred 2 years earlier), which is not clear. (It could just as well be titled "Slayer Guitarist Jeff Hanneman Dies of Liver Failure After Using Hot Tub.")

Everyone seems to be assuming that there was a spider bite, even though he didn't see a spider or feel a bite. (A hot tub would be a strange place for a spider to bite.) But even if a spider did bite him, the bacterial infection would have been secondary.

Contracted necrotizing fasciitis early 2011, died of liver failure, May 2, 2013. A hot tub is a strange place for a spider bite but an excellent place to come in contact with fecal material and most of the bacteria that cause NF. AIDS, drugs and alcohol abuse are presently the 3 commonest contributing factors in the disease. Spider involvement has never been clinically proven.

Medical science at it's worst. Assume Assume Assume Ass...

I'm curious if this hottub bite was even in the range of recluse spiders. From what I could research, it sounds like this hottub incident was in CA...

There's some speculation out there of him contracting this by using dirty needles. Honestly, when I saw the picture of him, I noticed his arm and it was the first thing I thought of. But first impressions are often wrong.

His arm was definitely inflicted with some serious necrosis. But man, who really knows what triggered it. He could have made the hottub story up.

It's unfortunate the scapegoat had to be a spider. Just more fuel to the fear :mask:

CYNIC COMMENT: If only he had the decency to use the classic modern musician method of demise: drowning on one's own vomit. Just a little bit harder to blame on a spider.

How was the spider? Administer an antidote I hope. Therapy? Psychological counseling? Did it fully recover?

Agree. Hot tubs are a breeding ground! I have one, and have it cleaned 3x week, even though it's not used much.

I've also found LOTS of true spiders under the thermal cover, and in hanging out in the dry part of the filter compartment. It's dark, warm and humid.

Will miss him nonetheless, much of my youth occurred with reign in blood and south of heaven as the soundtrack.

I looked into the origin of the word "scapegoat" a long time ago, it was kind of an eye-opener to words and association to imagery, origins and meanings. People used to symbolically stash their sins in animals to set themselves free, wanting to think they were not responsible for what they do, selfishly shunning responsibility and mentally impregnating the animal with what belongs to their self. So the culture of the past would feel better believing their "sins" were transfered from them to the "goat", then they would have the goat run off, away from "them". So the symbology there is that their sins were far away from them. Something like that anyway.

Well, what do you expect? Lol Pesticide companies sponsor many channels.

Of course they're gonna throw this garbage out there, to fear everyone into stocking up on the newest pesticide that kills EVEN SCORPIONZ.

lol

Just a little addendum to make you uncomfortable. Microbiologists have successfully cultured and grew Neisseria gonorrhoeae in wooden hot tubs.

On the AP today. The dude died of cirrhosis, completely unrelated to a spider bite. Nuff said.
