OK, SO LIKE, UH, I'M NEW TO THIS HOBBY AS OF 8-29 AND STILL LEARNING ABOUT MY GRAMMASTOLA RED HAIR. A FEW MINUTES AGO SHE STARTED CLIMBING THE GLASS. HER ENCLOSURE IS DRY SOIL, WHICH SHE SEEMS TO TOLERATE QUITE WELL. SHE'S IN 10 GAL. TANK WITH A SHALLOW WATER DISH AND A LOG-LIKE HIDING PLACE. THE TEMP IS FINE AND BLAH BLAH BLAH..... NOW I THOUGHT, OR READ SOMEWHERE, OR BOTH, THAT A HEALTHY T. IS AN ACTIVE T., AND AN ACTIVE T. IS GOOD. BUT I'VE NEVER SEEN HER CLIMB THE GLASS. SHE STAYED ON IT AND SOON CLIMBED TO THE TOP. AFTER HANGING OUT THERE FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES, SHE CAME DOWN, WENT INTO A CORNER, AND NOW SHE'S SLEEP. SO, SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT'S THE CLIMBING ALL ABOUT? AREN'T THEY GROUND SPIDERS? WILL SHE PERIODICALLY SURPRISE ME WITH NEW "TRICKS"? ANYBODY KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT?

O_O that's normal... just make sure there isn't too much distance for your T to fall. 1 to 1 and 1/2 legspan of space between the top of the enclosure and the substrate is considered "safe."

your post...hurts. Sorry, no offense, but you can get the message across just as easily with out capitalizing, enlarging, and coloring your text.

on the topic, I agree with Roski, its perfectly normal for them to climb/explore, just be sure there's enough substrate so if your T falls while climbing it's at less of a risk of injuring itself.

I just got a juvenile Brachypelma albopilosum today and he has mostly been sitting on the side of the tank. I think its normal just because its a Terrestrial Tarantula does not mean it will never walk the side of the tank. Probly just checking stuff out or something he didnt like happened on the floor, and they do that to get away.

Heck even if I were a Terrestrial land dwelling spider I would love to walk along walls and defy gravity, can you blame it {D

Welcome to the site and as a previous poster said, might not wanna go with the all caps, bright green bold text. Some people might get annoyed.

 I was going GREEN!! And no, you're not "SORRY", and it is offensive. Who are you to tell me how to use my features on my computer? It obviously didn't hurt too much because you read it and responded and that's all I needed; didn't need your personal input on my fonts. Thanks anyway.

Acctually I am sorry, because I don't like being like that, and it did hurt, I've been suffering from a headache all day and opened this thread to be assalted with giant green letters. I read through it and offered what i knew because I'm a nice person. :)

Nothing to worry about. Assuming your G. Rosea is as new to it's enclosure as you are to the hobby, it's probably just exploring. As long as that substrate is bone dry, and it doesn't have ample amounts of room to fall and risk injury, it'll be ok.

And to the other guys - we already had one titanic battle to the death over grammar, punctuation and spelling today. Let's not get another thread locked out lol.

Thanks Ariel, and I do understand. Just not the type of "WELCOME" I expected being a new user and hobbyist posting a concern. I appreciate your input concerning the T. My suggestion on the headache: try lying down; I would think that the light from the screen, the squinting to read small writing, and remembering the log in & passcode would make the headache worse so why add pain to injury? Maybe going online with a headache isn't the best choice, considering you never know what type of "fonts" will pop out at you, irritate the eyes, tease the headache, and cause you to negatively respond. Now I'm offering what I know because I'm a nice person too.

OK, SO LIKE, UH, I'M NEW TO THIS HOBBY AS OF 8-29 AND STILL LEARNING ABOUT MY GRAMMASTOLA RED HAIR.
Welcome to the addiction!:D i am unsure what a Grammostola Red Hair is. Could you mean the G. rosea RedColorForm(RCF)?

Did you get the T first and then research or the other way around?

A FEW MINUTES AGO SHE STARTED CLIMBING THE GLASS.
This brings some questions to mind.

Are you sure, it's a she?
You can check the back of its front two legs for hooks and its pedipalps for bulbs/ boxing gloves. If the T has both of those(if they have one, they have the other), then you have yourself a fella.

How much substrate do you have in the enclosure?

Is the spider able to fall more than about a legspan and a half?
If so, then you should add more substrate.

HER ENCLOSURE IS DRY SOIL, WHICH SHE SEEMS TO TOLERATE QUITE WELL.
Do you literally mean potting soil?

Is it free of fertilizers?

SHE'S IN 10 GAL. TANK WITH A SHALLOW WATER DISH AND A LOG-LIKE HIDING PLACE. THE TEMP IS FINE AND BLAH BLAH BLAH.....
It isn't really just blah, blah, blah. They are things that we don't have to ask you now, so thank you for the blahs.:p

NOW I THOUGHT, OR READ SOMEWHERE, OR BOTH, THAT A HEALTHY T. IS AN ACTIVE T., AND AN ACTIVE T. IS GOOD.
i am unsure where you heard this, but it is wrong. A happy T is one that sits calmly in one place for hours. When they are actively roaming their cage or climbing the walls, then it could be several things.

It could be a MM(mature male) and is desperately looking for some sweet, sweet lovin';); or it could be unhappy with its environment(we know its dry, so it can't be irritated by moist substrate) or maybe it's just not settled in yet.(that can take days/ weeks/ months depending on the T)

BUT I'VE NEVER SEEN HER CLIMB THE GLASS. SHE STAYED ON IT AND SOON CLIMBED TO THE TOP. AFTER HANGING OUT THERE FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES, SHE CAME DOWN,
Once again, i am worried about your amount of substrate. We have our G. rosea in a 10 gallon tank with 7" of substrate in there, to keep it a safe enclosure for her. If you don't have something similar, then if she falls she has the potential to really hurt herself.

WENT INTO A CORNER, AND NOW SHE'S SLEEP.
As far as i know, Ts do not actively have a sleep cycle, so i am unsure how you know its Asleep. i know they don't have eyelids........:p

SO, SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT'S THE CLIMBING ALL ABOUT?
Answer some of my questions and maybe we can figure it out.:D

AREN'T THEY GROUND SPIDERS?
If it is in fact a G. roseaRCF, then yes it is a terrestrial tarantula.

WILL SHE PERIODICALLY SURPRISE ME WITH NEW "TRICKS"? ANYBODY KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT?
YES!!!! Tarantulas are just plain weird compared to any other animal i have kept. They will do things you don't expect, but the key is to learn to recognize what is normal behavior and what is not. Climbing the walls isn't, unless it is a MM.

Also, please don't post with all caps, it makes me feel like i am being yelled at and the color and bold is unnecessary as well. It really does make my eye hurt to read it. The advanced search on this site can be your best buddy if you let it. i know there are plenty of threads out there about Ts climbing walls.(e.g. "climbing" in the advanced search function and search titles) The link in my signature is another great thread for newbies and there is a sticky specifically for G. rosea keepers, so you might give them a look-see.:D

Take solace in the fact i 'doubt' it is anything 'bad', but once you answer some of the questions, people should be able to help a bit more.:D

I do apologize if I seemed rude  , welcome to the boards and to the hobby, its very addicting ;). Oh, I've tried just about everything to get rid of this headache, even lying down, I pretty much figured I'd be online and suffer than lie around bored suffering. {D

That first reply took me awhile to type out, no one had replied when i started, but it really does matter to me if your text is green, bold and caps. i am wearing an eyepatch, so the eye that isn't covered gets very tired. So, opening up the thread to help a newbie and seeing your post, made it hard to read. i had to just hit the quote button, so i could read it at least in black. (not that i need a 'real' medical reason to ask you politely to not post that way)It's not very friendly or appreciative to attack people in your first thread for making a very simple request. Nobody uses colors or caps here as common courtesy.

I agree with Ariel and curiousme, as I'm sure most of you would have already figured out.

That post hurt to read.

Now, OCTAVIA (see? Doesn't it look like I'm yelling at you?), please read the following thread:

http://www.arachnoboards.com/ab/showthread.php?t=5292

Should answer most of your initial questions about your recent addition to the family.

And welcome to the hobby. :)

Welcome!!!! It sounds to me like you are keeping your rosie exactly as they like to be kept. Don't worry. Climbing occasionally isn't a worry. If she was on the side of the tank for days and wouldn't come down, yes, but it sounds like she was just checking out her home.
The only thing rosies have in common is that they can range from super sweet and gentle to killer psycho bugs. They are all different and can change in temperment from moult to moult.
You, by the way, chose the name of my very first T, who is a rosehair, as your user name. That is neat!

NOW I THOUGHT, OR READ SOMEWHERE, OR BOTH, THAT A HEALTHY T. IS AN ACTIVE T., AND AN ACTIVE T. IS GOOD.
sorry but i don't know where have you got that from, a healthy tarantula will sit in its hiding place and wait for prey to pass by.
they don't move around a lot, of course they sometimes do, just to have a look around i guess.
some t's are more active then others, but in general they wont walk around a lot.
but then again, as you have written your not so long in the hobby, that also means the t's relatively fresh in her tank. they tend to walk around their tank a lot after being moved to it, it takes a little time for them to settle in.

If this is the first time you have seen it climb the walls(which i was unclear on), then i agree that it is probably just settling in. However, if this is an oft occurrence, then see my previous post. :D

All spiders will attemp to do some climbing,it's normally what they do.All mine do anyway, even the ground lovers.
The main problem comes where you keep terrestrials with too much height in their tanks. This risks a fall which could kill a spider, especially a large bodied spider such as an L.Para for instance.Although the same can be said for any terrestrial spider.
I have even seen my crawshayi climbing around and that is an out and out burrower.

As others have said, EVEN JUST PLAIN CAPS COMES ACROSS AS YELLING, but I'm guessing you haven't spent any time on online message boards before this. I do like the green though. :)

At any rate, no harm done, and welcome!!!!
