Shelves, cabinets... show me your display areas!

Hey all,

I am new to the hobby and am just in the research phase. I know that some of you have huge collections, but I don't plan on having too too many (5? And a few jumping spiders.) I plan on having naturalistic enclosures and have them clustered together in some kind of bookcase or shelves for a display.

I have done a search and have seen some setups, but I was hoping that you all could post your collection setups here for me.

I am most interested in people that have smaller collections or portions of them out on display in their main living areas, or maybe in a room that has a function other than a spider room. ;)

But… If you have 500 spiders I would also like to see your set up as well.

Thanks!

Thanks - I have been looking at that (working my way through it backwards), but mostly see individual enclosure photos, not what I'm asking for above.

Here is what Im in the process of assembling.

I decided that I am going to go ahead on using a computer/ controller from my old reef aquarium to automate the temperature, photoperiod and ventilation in the cabinets I'm moving my growing collection into.
It's a thousand dollar piece of equipment sitting in storage doing nothing so why not? I just dragged it out. I can even program it to follow seasonal changes via modulating the night/ day temperature, shortening or lengthening the photoperiod, I can program in any "if x is this - then XYZ off / of on" statements. I'm going to get an expansion module that will allow me two temperature probes, both able to be calibrated/ set hysteresis etc etc- one for each cabinet to control the heat tape and ventilation fan programming. I will be able to automate everything, I can monitor and control everything remotely via Internet connection. Overkill? Probably but-
Secured cabinets = Cat
Heating = because Im a polar bear -I keep my place at 68°f year round
while this is "fine" it's far from optimal and having a backround in biology, I know ectotherms metabolic processes heavily rely on temperature and I don't like to settle for "fine", I want "optimal"

I'm going to beta test everything on the currently empty cabinet.

If you want fitting terrariums, better choose the shelf first and then pick them fitting said shelf. Pick something sturdy enough to hold all the terrariums as well as the stile you like.
For example, the ikea ivar-shelf is 80cm long, 30cm deep and can be basically any hight you want. Alternatively there are also wall strip shelves that are directly fastened to any wall you may choose.

If you already have a type of enclosure in mind, or have specific requirements for enclosure dimentions, you could also go the othey way and pick the final enclosures first and then choose a shelf with the corresponding dimentions.

The above link will get you many ideas on how people set these up in their rooms, but as you said much of it is individualistic.

That looks really nice! I love the techy nature, too. I also plan on adding some heat, we have a ranch home that's efficient, and are completely comfortable between 64-67 in winter.

Good point in that I might want to work backwards. This is a perrfect fit. Is this the Ikea shelf you mention?

:rofl:this tool cart was chosen based purely on function only. my cat cant knock any cages over climbing/sleeping on them/i can hang my cane on it as i work with my ts/its quake proof nothing will fall off unless its strong enough to knock the entire cart over. most importantly its wheeled so i can just get my cat into its carrier load any documents needed and wheel everything out cat/ts etc in the event i need to evac from my bottom floor apartment. no pets left behind .

Sounds like a perfect setup! Cute kitty

Impressive collection and so tidy and well-organized. Are those all tarantulas or do you have other critters also?

Why I call it "the spider desk" 🤣

They live in my office, which is also my craft room, and I work from the couch 😂

yes, there are also lots of modular options, like the cabinets, drawers or even rattan-doors in case you want to semi hide sling vials, mine are mostly inside the cabinets.

only downsides are that they are no longer cheap like they used to be and i sometimes wish they were 40cm deep, that would make finding fitting enclosures (especially larger ones) much easier

My office is also my craft room, and that's where I think mine will go, too! I'm getting a jumping spider this week, she will start in my living room but I love the idea of making the office more of a room with little vivariums to look at. My bearded dragon also lives in there, he has a dirt substrate and some plants - he's 13 and not super active - I figure if I'm going to have a pet rock I might as well enjoy looking at their living spaces.

What species is Drama Queen? 😆

Here is the shelf that I have in my bedroom. I went the route of choosing which T's I wanted to keep > then what enclosures I wanted to keep them in > then the shelf last.

I think that first step of knowing exactly what you want to keep is very important if you want unity among your enclosures. Keeping them the same style/manufacturer.

For display shelves - I think lighting is important - this could be lights directly over the enclosures or some sort of background or ambient lighting to make everything pop and feel like a showpiece. I know lighting is a big topic on its own - I opted for mounting cabinet puck lights under the shelves and putting them on a dimmer. They are far less bright in person than they appear in the picture.

Oh man, the mix match assortment of containers I use without any form of organization would probably give you nightmares 🤣

This is a clean setup though for sure
Lol not really, I went through that phase in the beginning where I was just using what I had and trying to figure out what was best. I'm not really even OCD about being tidy per se. It's just there are several major advantages to being standardized, and those advantages pay major dividends over time, which allows you to have scalability as the collection grows.

If you have scalability and efficiency, that means you can collect more animals while spending less time doing husbandry each week without sacrificing the quality of life for all specimens.

My job might also entail logistics and data analysis as well........

I’m posting this mainly to show how disorganised I am though I have a spreadsheet and I am going to label everything eventually. OCD Trigger Warning. 🤣 On a positive note I can watch TV and my spiders at the same time.

Oh man I love this - I do have a list I'm working on to pick first species and maybe eventuals because I don't plan on having all that many.

I love the uniformity here, and love the aesthetics.
Are they bioactive or naturalistic? Looks like all real plants..? This is what I'm wanting to do.
