I have a three year old niece who loves looking at my tarantulas and lives half the time at my place. I usually keep the door to my room closed, as it has no lock. This was working real well; but, lately, when I come home from work, I find the door to my room open. This is because I, unfortunately, cannot afford my own apartment, and my mom will enter my room to look out the window and forget to close the door. I've reminded her of the dangers and she has gotten better about shutting the door. (I sometimes forget to close it when I'm running late from work.) My niece is also getting stronger and could potentially, in the near future, be able to open my door herself.
The other day while I was in my room, my niece picked up one of the Tupperware containers to look at the tarantula. I told her not to do it anymore, to just look or ask me to show her the tarantula myself. She is very intelligent and understood what I said to her and she knows which tarantulas to never ever touch. However, I don't, and would me dumb of me to, expect a 3-4 yr old to not forget things, or to not be too interested and act on her impulses.
I'm afraid that my niece will go in there while I'm not home, try to hold one of the containers, drop it, try to open it, let a tarantula escape, get her eyes sprayed by urticating hairs, and get bitten. Not only would I (and all my tarantulas and scorpions) get murdered by my brother, but my niece and animals could get hurt. Most of the tarantulas would not cause any medically significant damage but I'm getting a couple of Pterinochilus murinus.
The only tarantula that has a lock on it is my B. smithi., simply because it is in an Exoterra terrarium that comes with a lock. None of my Tupperware containers or other aquariums have locks.
Anyone have locks or ideas on how I could child proof everything?
