I just bought the African scorpions. I think they're Hottentotta sp., but the male's thick tail makes me confused...

Thanks for your advise. Actaully, I don't know the african Hottenttotta males have the thick tail. I used to keep some Hottentotta judaicus b4, but the male did not have the robust tail... So, I thought it's another species.
Now, I know the answer, thanks. :worship:

I'm not sold that these are Hottentotta...I'd like for Luc or Dave to chime in.

The very thick tail segments...hmmm...looks Parabuthus or Androctonus. Which country did these come from?

thanks,
Chris

I think it is definitely Hottentotta spp.
You should feed him well, when he become fat, you wll find that the tail is not thick like before...

Looks just like these...out of tanzania there are two species out of there,I believe one is polystictus..notice the line segments on their backs are different, and I have several of each...and their tails ARE fat, I have a few ready to pop from being gravid and they have large tails

Hei, If those are for sure Hottentotta and it appears that they are polystictus, Your substrate looks too moist for them. You might want to use something a bit drier such as sand

{D no worry, I did not keep them in moist condition. The moist substrate used for photography only.
Actually, the tanzanian guy said it was Parabuthus.... they were mixed with some Parabuthus leisoma, but I can sure they're not Parabuthus.

How large of this Hottentotta sp. when adult? :?

Hei,

I think you are the proud owner of three H.trilineatus. Kraken, the scorp in the 2 big pictures look like H.polystictus (more then the scorps in Heis' pictures). But I could be wrong...

Hei, if I may give you tip: F.Kovarik has a paper "the scorpions of Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia and another african country. There is some info about Hottentotta. This genus is being revised soon...Furthermore, you could check out Vincents Hottentotta-site.

Hottentotta is a mess at the moment but they do look like Hottentotta sp. More than likely, trilineatus, polystictus, eminii, etc...who knows? The best people to ask would be Vincent or Eric.
And, Hei, feed those guys and gals! LOL

Take care...Luc
