Scorpion Hunting

Okay, Next week when I get the chance I'm going to go "Scorpion Hunting" And well.............I don't really know how, when, or where to look for scorps.......I live in florida........and since I've lived here I've seen a total of 3 scorps..............But I know that they're here............All my friends see them every now and then.............And I've realised that florida has alot of very kickass types..........very colorful................So I think I'll try and catch a few local types..................So hopefully with success I'll catch a few.............So I want to know if any of you have EVER done this...........And can you give me some tips on "Scorp Hunting?"................So if any of you have ever done this.................PLEASE help.............I want to know, what type(s) to look for.............where they'll be hiding...................ANY INFO WILL HELP!............I think this will be fun.................

Yes, go for it!, you will have a lot of fun. All you need is: 1) a UV or blacklight, Walmart has some compact battery powered ones. 2) a pair of long forceps for grasping them by them by the tail or otherwise directing them into a container. 3) something that protects your legs from the knees down for snake protection(optional).4) I like to use a large plastic pitcher with a few handfulls of long grass to put them in, and a plastic drinking cup for the actual capture, the grass keeps them off of eachother. make sure and know you are in a good spot, like any hunting, and also, beware of snakes. if u are using a blacklight at night, don't look for scorpions, look for snakes, you won't need to search for the scorps, they will just pop right out.

thebestway to get them is to have a vial ready, place it in front of them, and gently nudge them into the vial with forceps, a twig, etc. from behind.

Well, Florida is going to be a little different than say, Arizona or Eastern Washington, the species that live there are largely arboreal. Istead of just crawling around on the ground like desert scorps, they might be found on any tree, and all other types of foliage, plants and low bushes will be good places to shine the light. I would personally focus on the last five feet of larger bark-bearing trees.

You can protect your legs with snake-proof materials made from various things. Yes, similar to that other expression "snakes happen", but if you are careful, you can catch numerous Centruroides gracilis without being a statistic. I hope that you are successful.

Yes, no doubt about it, you are in FL, it's crawling with scorps.

Lots of lizards could mean that you don't have any snakes in your backyard. The best advice I was ever given was, "the trick with venomous critters, is to find them before they find you".

I was more wondering about the lizards eating ALL the scorps. some of the lizards are pretty big...............some bigger than my emp.
