Scorpion heat lamp question.

Hey everyone!

I am thinking about getting a scorpion one day (say Heterometrus) and it seems that people say that heat mats aren't the best at heating the whole cage very well; only the side hotspot or so. My room I would keep it in averages around 23-27'c depending on the weather so it's pretty warm and in the summer it will definitely be at least 25'c+ during the day time temps. Do you guys think that I could get away with just a heat mat on a thermostat? If I did need or decide to use a heat lamp would that need to be on a thermostat as well; As a dimmer thermostat is pretty expensive to me.

Thanks for the replies!

Jimmy.

If you use a heating source make sure it's not on the bottom so the scorpion doesn't cook itself.

In your case a heating mat + thermostat is usually enough. That hot spot you are talking about is the preferred way.
Having a hot and a cold zone gives the scorpion the opportunity to regulate it's body temperature.
Heat mats come in several sizes and power ratings, don't get one that is too small.

Yes not going to thanks :)

I'm guessing that the heat mat will heat up the rest of the enclosure a little, so I don't need to worry too much about the cold end temps as I see lots of people recommend 26'c or so for the cold end.

Thanks for the info. :)

No, I don't use one, but I based the terrarium off of the heat it will be giving so she can easily go to any temperature she wanted to go to.
Good solution, a thermostat would decrease power consumption.
I was told electrical power costs nearly nothing in the US (that info could be wrong or outdated), so that might not be an issue for you.
You guys pay about 6-9 cents USD/KWh ?

I see. Thermostats for heat lamps are pretty expensive where I live, so I don't really wanna use one if I have to pay for a thermostat but it looks like as long as I use the appropriate wattage it should be okay.

@Jimbo12 I don't know what you call 'expensive', but are you aware of the STC1000 ? Just send less than 12$USD of your Paypal money to China.....
example: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Digital-ST...124131?hash=item216cbb2263:g:QXgAAOSwIGlecYic
I call that pretty cheap
I use several myself, works fine.
If you want one that not only switches ON/OFF based on temperature, but also can switch on a set humidity you would go for the SHT2000.
I use those for my high humidity setups, also work great.

***Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with these sellers.
These devices require you to wire up 230/240V mains in the UK, if you are not comfortable doing that, then DON'T.
In that case always ask someone that is experienced in mains/high voltage electrics.... or just DON'T.
Anything you do is at your own risk, I won't be responsible if you burn your house down in any way, shape or form. :anxious:

I would 100% buy a thermostat for heat bulbs that price, but those ON/OFF thermostats are only really useful for heat mats I've heard .They will just keep turning the heat bulb on and off all the time, and that will cause the bulb to blow faster I would expect. In the uk a dimmer thermostat for heat bulbs are about 62$ so I don't think I'm gonna go with the lamp :) If I did get a lamp would it have to be a infrared one that I leave on all night or a normal one that I just turn off at night?
