Rough night last night. My favorite T sling, a 1.5 inch A. Versi we called Sage, hadn't been eating for the last two weeks. Thought he was in pre-molt. Been checking on him regularly and he's always been in his little tube web. Night before last I checked on him and he was on the substrate in his enclosure in a death curl. I didn't want to move him at that point-- thought he was molting. I checked on him yesterday morning, still hadn't moved. Thought it was odd that a molt would take that long but wanted to give him a little more time just in case. Checked on him around noon and still no movement. Transferred him to an ICU but still no movement, nothing. Checked this morning, still same position, nothing. He's been kept at 70-75 degrees with 80-90% humidity. Checked the substrate for mites and found nothing. He was such a great little eater and webber. When I would open his enclosure he'd always peek out of his tube waiting for food - kind of like a game of peek-a-boo. He'll be missed.

With all the avic deaths this year there must be somthing up, it has to be some kind of virus or something......a T virus.

That would suck big ones if zombie tarantulas started to populate the earth. :p

Redbrandy00: I'm sorry that happened to your sling. :( I say this only half-jokingly, it probably sounds silly, but too bad there's no such thing as a medical examiner for spiders... it'd at least shed some light on the sudden deaths. :(

:( I'm so sorry..

It's so sad that everyone is losing their slings, and can't find an explanation why :(

Don't give-up on Sp.

I rarely have a Versi DIE on me, unless someone just shipped me One....LOL

There have been alot of sling to 1 1/2" deaths in this Sp. this year...........

I hope it's NOT a virus, that some have suggested and looked into...........

Mine was healthy just as yours........Same thing went down........ALL my other Avics Have done great, EXCEPT for one A.Amazonica murder by Turkish Roach.......Good Luck w/ next one-Don't feel it's your fault....Just try to learn from it somehow.........................Jason

Since I have an A. versi and an A. avic sling, I was wondering if anyone knows how long everyone's actually had their slings before they died? My two have been doing great for the past 5 and 7 months now, and was wondering if they've had their slings for only a couple months, or if they had them a long time before they suddenly dropped dead?

I've gone down that road of thought. Like maybe I'd get adult females instead. If they lasted a good time, get them a male..

Sure makes me too nervous in getting a Singepore blue now..

Avics and early death

It's not just slings that die. I had a Avic. avic molt MM left his molt sling traveled around the cage a few days no problems. I checked on everyone this morning my little male was dead. So it doesn't matter how many T's you have the unexplained can happen. Sorry about your loss, the best way I deal with this is get more T's. Hang in there Kevin

I have a few tiny Avic slings, and for the last week my purpurea and versicolor were both acting very strange. Not eating, sitting in weird positions. I kinda resigned myself to the fact that they were either going to molt or were gonna die. I knew that if I tried to intervene it would likely cause more harm then good, so I just let them be.

Thankfully they both molted, but from the sounds of it, they could each have been fading away into an eventual death curl like so many other Avic slings just as easily.

It's stressful keeping these little slings, especially not knowing what can be done. I've actually decided that I'm not purchasing any more Avicularia slings until mine have reached a good 3 inches. I just can't handle peering into anymore enclosures while holding my breath just hoping not to see a death curl.

Not all avis are designed to make it. Just because we intervene and give sac mates a great chance to make it, a large number will not make it due to genetic make-up.

I have been raising 10 A versi, 10 A avi, 5 A biceogi, 4 A purpurea slings and I can easily say that not all siblings have the same tools to make it.

Inevitably runts will die. Some are born weak, and some just die regardless of care.

Out of the 10 A versi and A avis, a couple just refused to eat, did not matter what I fed while their siblings thrived, and they just whithered and died.

80 pct of each are doing very well, have so for about 8 months.

There is no malady affecting avi slings, some are just weaker than others.

Rather than start my own thread, I'll just add to this one.

Add another SADS death to the count this year. Little Agnes was a versi from Ryan's (most recent?) sac, and up until this point, was perfectly healthy. Eating, webbing, molting, ideal vial conditions... Then two nights ago, she was on the substrate instead of in her web. I didn't think much of it until I saw she was still down there yesterday morning. I put her in an ICU, but I think it was already too late by that point. I have NO clue what made this healthy little baby suddenly die. :( I also have one of her sacmates, and I will be watching that one very closely now....even though I know SADS seems to be quite random.

(For anyone who remembers my thread where I asked why my versi sling was "vibrating" her web instead of pouncing on prey right away....that's not the one that died. The one that died is the sibling, which I believe I noted in that other thread appeared as the healthier of the two.)

I also do not agree with the idea that it could be a virus. An avic-specific genetic flaw? Sure. Virus, no.
