More common names muddying the hobby, each as confusing as the last. And you're actively contributing to it. Don't be surprised that it rubs some people the wrong way.
I find it hard to believe that pet stores and sketchy online sources will start labelling tarantulas things like "Murderess" and "Hypnotoes"

I saw an online store selling a "Queen Baboon" recently. That moniker was coined by one of our very own members, it didn't exist before him.

Common names have to start somewhere.

While that may be true, most of these names are don't really sound like anything somebody wiunn call a tarantula "queen baboon" is a far cry from "the gladiator" and "Hypnotoes"

Probably ran by an angry feminazi who despises the use of the word "King"
Careful, you forgot the trigger warning, some people here might breathe heavy now.

Regarding common names, @EulersK has a point, they start somewhere.
The only common name I personally use and accept (and like) is "OBT" as in Orange Bitey Thing (while 'officially' it is B for Baboon of course).
But that's a good example, Orange Bitey Thing probably started as a joke as well, and now that's established quite well.
The thread is light-hearted/silly, but yeah... I'd rather not plant the seed for even more common names, they are cancerous enough already.

The only people who are going to get triggered at that are probably the sort of nutcases who'd think that me saying "good morning" as I pass them on my way to the shops is either me somehow trying to assert my dominance or some form of sexual harassment.

To be fair, OBT isn't even the correct common name for them. If I remember correctly, it's "Usambara Orange Baboon" or something very similar to that.

The majority of people use GBB simply because nobody can be arsed to write Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens :writer::dead::rofl:

Bingo!!! I knew you’d get it.

Also the use of “we” means all of us, and I NEVER refer to those species by one member’s pet name. He should have wrote “many”.

Maybe I should start a new common name for I mira, the Blue Suede Shoe Baboon.

Well, good luck my man into finding an online inverts/arachnids/whatever store that one day will use that. My best wishes :angelic:

By Jove, btw :pompous:
I don't have a clue about this (quote) '... one of our very own members' mentioned by old good @EulersK in the post before, but let me say this: a virtual hug to you, son. Good job.

I have no interest in spreading creating common names, and would take no pride in the stupidity of a store that picked a moniker for the use of a species. If anything I would feel bad if that had happened, as there's no need to create more confusion.

Not going to lie, when talking about that species to people not in the hobby, I usually accidentally refer to it as a Queen Baboon. I even wrote that on a deli cup when I was selling it  I despise common names, but buyers usually insist on it.

Shame on you!! Using phony, false "common" names like that...it's a slippery slope now, you'll be partnering with Slackwater in no time!!:watchingyou::watchingyou::watchingyou:

Next you'll be selling slings as T blondi but are really albo's...:troll:

This is 'official/serious' mode, because if one day you will spot an online vendor selling an I.mira with written below: 'Blue Suede Shoe Baboon' you will be happy like a children during Christmas :angelic:

Besides, nations/languages/borders/currency etc changes, so a Theraphosidae common name changing isn't so big deal in the general picture :pompous:

A real change would be the total ban (as if something like that should be possible) of the use of common names.

So you are the ----> culprit <---- of that :pompous: <-- this is Dr. Watson 1800-style Smilies.

In fact I was wondering who could had been that (quote) '... one of our very own members' because I always called that Theraphosidae Goddess* :pompous: <-- this is 1800-style old noble British man of once, Smilies.

I would not be happy, that is incorrect.
