I was observing a few of my roaches , they were climbing the glass then i watch them they keep falling off , then the next day i observed it again and a few of the roaches can climb the petro jelly while some cannot... So what can i do to avoid the few of the roaches to escape? (i got a lid)

I use olive oil, it lasts a long time but it will make your set-up look bad because it drips down, it's kind of messy like that. But the roaches over here aren't for display necessarily so it doesn't bother me. You could probably glue something around near the top, something like a roof over-hang and put the oil on that instead of the glass. I've thought about trying something like that but haven't gotten around to trying something like that.

Some roaches do easily cross the jelly line. I keep some of the worst offenders in 5 gallon (paint) buckets with tight fitting lids with micro-screen over the few ventilation holes. I beat the lid like a drum a couple times before opening it. Not nice for the animals I suppose, but I prefer this music to the song of unhappy family members dodging roaches.

Though some species are more likely to chew through than others, I find that placing a piece of paper towel or wax paper between the lid and container to be effective in closing those little gaps that sometimes exist otherwise. If you're anything like me you're using many different types of containers and since not all roaches have evolved the same habits, you will find that some habitat tweaking is needed.

I just run my finger along the petroleum jelly every few days to make sure that it hasnt formed a 'surface skin'.
