Roach Questions

I have recently started a B. Dubia roach colony. I only had 10 roaches that i had acquired so i new that would be way to slow in reproducing if at all so i kept feeding crickets until i could pick up more Dubia. Those roaches seemed fine in the enclosure.

I recently ordered 200 dubia which just arrived about 3 days ago. I was surprised when i put them in as at least 100 of them were dead. They were squished together and stunk horribly. Most of the dead ones were not even recognizable as roaches. They were just hunks of brown and black jello and liquid. It was horrible. I let the ones that were alive go into the enclosure and got rid of all the nasty dead ones.

I put some food in there and they eat it all super fast but now i notice that most all of the roaches are not moving and a lot of them are on there backs not moving.

I pick up the egg crates and some run around like mad trying to get away while others just barley move or don't move at all.

I cleaned out the cage yesterday and moved all the live roaches into the new container while getting rid of another 40 or so dead roaches. Later that night I checked and even more are not moving, on there backs, and not running, barley moving when i touch them

Does a roach ever get lethargic and just sit there? do they molt on there backs? or did i get a sick shipment of roaches and they are all dieing? i never seen this out of the roaches i had before this shipment.

What is their water source? It sounds like shipping was done in extremely hot weather? Make sure they are given water at all times!
How were they packaged?
I'd contact the seller and let them know about the deaths.
Good Luck.:)

There water source is the blue water gel and i have been misting the enclosure a lot. Should i give them actual water in a dish as i do my T's?

Been feeding them roach bites, goldfish flakes, lettuce, carrots and other fruits and veggies

The shipping was really bad

I water my roaches with hydrated water crystals. You can get these from Aaron Pauling VERY cheaply, AaronPauling.com. They can also eat crushed up whole grain cereal and cat food.

Cool! much appreciated. I will try a different set up.

At least i know that the roaches are messed up. I just didn't know if it was normal for them to just sit there as every video i have ever seen on roaches had them running around like crazy. I didn't know if they molted on there backs like T's but from what i am reading they don't so it's safe to say that the ones on there backs are dead.

Thanks for the help. I gotta get more now as over 150 of the 200 i got are now dead, sadly, do to poor shipping.

Are you running a heat source? What are your temps? These are tropical roaches and should have temps about 90 degress f.

This has nothing to do with the dieoff, they won't die if they aren't kept at 85+, they just won't breed/eat as much. I keep mine at room temp and they are just dandy and multiplying like...well roaches.

85 is just fine, I wouldn't go higher than that myself.

That would be great!!

I will PM you

Thanks for all the help. I found a few roaches that died halfway during a molt so i thought that maybe humidity was an issue that's why i starting misting. Maybe if i get a few that are shipped correctly and not sick than i will be ok.

Is there a difference between water crystals and water gel?

I keep mine at room temp with no water source other than veggies most of the time and they breed like crazy. I would think that Oregon would be fairly humid.. are you coastal? If the paking was bad.. that was most likely the reason they died in transit. You are correct they molt upright... dubias will some times play dead so make sure you check them before throwing them out. good luck..

Yea i am right on the coast. It's pretty humid here 80 to 90 most the time when it gets later it gets down to 75 or so.

I will contact the seller and let them know what happened. Hopefully they start shipping them better

Dead roaches

it isnt good to receive dead roaches. One of the reasons we ship USPS express and dont ship past wednesday and pack them like they will be in transit for a few days. There is a reason most people only offer live arrival guarantee on USPS express and not priority. if that want the problem then they sent you unhealthy roaches to begin with.

When i purchased the roaches the seller only had 1 shipping option for 1 price. I figured it would get them there alive. Why list a shipping option that will kill the animal? nobody wants to pay for a dead animal

The shipping was fast but the shipping was really bad. The cup was tightly in place in the box but there was no padding inside the cup with the roaches. They were free in the container and were beaten up in there pretty bad.

Definitely mention something to the seller. Regardless of what their shipping policy is, chances are they will help you out. At the very least the threat of a bad review will prompt them to act.

Priority mail can be used to ship roaches, and I have had great success using it. That said, I also offer express shipping. Additionally, if I sell wholesale (1000+), then express shipping is required. the more roaches you pack into a small space, the faster the shipping needs to be.

It sounds like the seller you ordered from hasn't been doing this very long. A couple of bad shipments, and they'll catch on really quick....or they will go out of business.

Hope it all works out!

I ordered the roaches from Randall Johnson screen name TarantulaLV

I e-mailed him to let him know what happened. I not upset and i don't want to out him i just hope that no more roaches are shipped like this.

I also e-mailed the link to this thread so he can see the discussion. Hopefully the roaches make it safe to the next buyer
