I checked on it today and its not looking good at all. When tauched it moved all its legs in a weird way then curled again. His mouth looks really pussy and nasty. Im not sure if i should just put it in the freezer and give it an easier death. Its been on its back for days. It doesnt look like a molt though what so ever. What would you guys suggest?

About Bark hides

What do you all think about bark hides picked up from the wild (where there are not pesticides for sure). Do you think that in time the bark could grow some kind of fungus (I've seen them grow in the insides of the barks sometimes) with high humidity or something that can cause disease and further death of a tarantula? Or maybe the species of the tree has anything to do with it? I personally use a Acacia sp. from Argentinian beaches. In years of keeping spiders, of course I had those unknown deaths and some of this spiders where in cages with barks. It may have nothing to do with the spiders' death, because actually I have several spiders with these barks for years...but well I wanted to hear your opinions and experiences about using tree barks.

By the way, don't give up on your tarantula! Though it's really frustrating to see her like that and not be able to help her :( I know what's that like.

If you pick up wild bark and such make sure to cook it in the oven first to kill anything that is growing on it.

Yes, but once it is in the tarantula's cage, with substrate and high humidity and maybe real plants, could it grow again things which may harm the tarantula? I think it grows things but I'm not sure if this harms the tarantula.

The idea of cooking the bark is to denature any of the seeds or spores that might be living on it. 350* for 30 minutes I think is what is recommended.

That's right, but I was wondering if after baking, when time passes by something could grow that could affect the tarantula...

Gee, I don't think much can survive 350* it's not like anything on earth outside of a volcanic crater gets that hot.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you're really worried about it you can buy sticks from the pet store. On the other hand, what do you think pet stores do to make them safe for pets (if they do anything at all). The only time I would buy decorations from a pet store is if it's cork bark as that's pretty hard to find anywhere else.

Well just an update. He might still have a chance. I saw he was hovering over a dry peice of sub and it looked like he was trying to get some water from it, so i moistened a chunk of it and put it into the ICU. Went out all day and came back and he has his fangs inside the sub. His legs arnt even curled anymore! it seems hes super dehydrated. Any idea of how i can give em some water without much effort on his part. I got a bottle cap full of water in there but doesnt seem like it has much strenght to climb it to drink.

She seems to like sucking from the ground so you might try a sponge. I would go to an art store and buy a natural sponge to minimize the chance of poisoning your poor animal.

I know sponges get a bad rap around here for microbe growth but if you change the sponge a lot (like every day) it should be fine. I have heard of people boiling their sponges but I don't know how much I trust it and IMHO it's not worth the life of my animals to test it out.

You could use a cotton swab but know that they treat them with bleach in processing to make them whiter for consumers.

Not a clue. i think it got some sort of infection because looking on its underside. it looks like some pussy fluid around its mouth. might be from the petsmart bark or a bad cricket.

Yeah, probably made worse by too high moisture too. There's a reason there are a lot of exotic diseases in the tropics.

Anyway, what matters now is that she's doing better.

Chalk one more reason as to why I don't trust pet stores.

well it ate today!! left a cricket in the ICU came back 3 hours later and it was gone. he is trying to climb the sides of the delicup which is about 1x its leg span. only two of his legs are semi curled up. Would it be possable to leave him in the ICU till it molts? It still doesnt look 100% responsive. any ideas on what i should do next?

WOW, I am surprised your T started to come out of that. I would think ICU till it seems "normal".

Personally I would leave it in the ICU until I knew it was fully rehydrated. But I don't know if being in an ICU constantly would stress it out? Anyway I hope it continues getting better, sounds like it might pull through!
