i found a female tonight on a black light i have hung behind a sheet in my backyard once i googled the caterpillar form of these i MUST get eggs from these before they are gone for the year
i have her in a paper bag in my room....if i take the bag back to light and hang her near the light will it increase chances of a male coming to her?

If you can build a mesh-screen enclosure for her and put her in an open area where her pheromones will be carried on the winds you should get males to come.

The chances are if you caught her with a blacklight she most likely is already bred. The females will usually sit and wait to fly until after they have bred, then they fly around laying eggs. I would predict she'll lay some viable eggs in the paper bag tonight.

If you decide to raise spome larvae, they always did best for me on sumac. They get huge and are quite beautiful and completely harmless.

OP, Great! Hope she lays for you.

Tom, That's neat! I've always wanted to raise a hickory horned devil but so far Monarch is about the only thing I've tried- albeit with success. I have yet to find an adult royal walnut but have found all the other silks. They're fairly common around here. There's a few new gas stations with bright lights at the edge of town near wooded areas and we're still fairly close to the new moon. Tonight may be the night for those or Dynastes. We shall see.

Sweet gum leaves

DITB, That seems to be the preferred host plant around here as well. Hope they all make it to maturity for you, at which point they'll be ENORMOUS!
Thanks for sharing

Wooooo, the ones you sent me started hatching too! :D
I'm gonna try putting some of them on hornworm chow to see if they can be reared on it.

Generattions down the line and you do manage to breed a large surplus of them, do you think they ever have a chance of being exported to the UK?
We have Robin moths in culture over here but Regal moths would be a nice addition :D

I think that would be a very bad idea.
