It's a lot better now than in the past. Dial it on back just 50 years and the discussion would be mostly loathing or cute pet/toy - I'd like to maim and mangle one for a few months before I get bored - depredation? What's that?

My family has been keeping parrots for a long time now, 50 years back their animals were just as happy as they are today.

Even wild parrots can adapt perfectly fine to captivity.
