Random Threat Posture?

Hey y'all. I've been noticing my 3"+ P. cambridgei in threat poses seemingly for no reason when I glance over at my T shelf. I've never seen it do this until yesterday and today. Has anyone had their Ts do this (for seemingly no reason)?::

Any T can do this, they seem to be unpredictable.. enjoy.

Hmm, must have just caught it in a bad mood I guess. Perhaps it has hit puberty and is going through that moody teen stage. I hope it doesn't last long. I've had enough of the loud music, sneaking out at night and back talking that this tarantula dad is going to take!

haha i had my 3" LP give me one today when i dropped a roach too close to his face.. same with my 5-5.5" fem C. cyaneopubescans droped a dubia and his wing hit her palp and she was up almost on her back 2 legs.. i felt so bad.. but it was so funny.. she was like the circus acts.. then when she was done being scared she stuffed her face so face i am pretty sure her fangs sliced and diced it enough that she could have slurped it up XD

Yes, I figure something is causing it to feel defensive. I'm just not really sure as to the what or why. I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary. I walk by and see it out all the time. Sometimes I can even pick up its' enclosure while it's out of it's hide and it doesn't seem to mind or it just goes back in its' hide. And why is it just starting this behaviour now? I'm starting to think I might not be too far off with the whole "puberty" thing because it did molt a couple weeks ago.

I've heard from others and experienced personally that T's can change behavior after a molt, lasting until the next one. My g. pulchripes is an absolute sweetie three out of four molts. She's calm about every disturbance and tolerant of handling. The fourth molt however, she gives threat posture at the slightest provocation.

Haha im convinced my buddies MF camb is a demon spawn. im not sure why but when you look at her she throws poses. Like i kid you not look at her from 10ft away, boom threat pose.. walk in the door and look at her cage by chance she shoots out of her retreat and throws a pose. try and feed her without looking AT her. Your good. Look at her as you drop in the roach.. and she sounds like an angry rattler den lol

Even better its every other molt.. shell be a hand tame babydoll (figure of speach) again in 8months...hopefully xD

I never had issues with P Cambridgei. Mine seem to be very docile.

I had a P irimina that every time I looked at her she gave me a threat display. Apparently she wasn't like that till I had received her. I don't know what I ever did to her, but I thought it was hilarious that she only gave me threat displays.

I have a P.metallica that will throw pose if you even just look at his cage. It's cute when a 1.5 inch sling does it but it's going to be interesting when get gets bigger.

No pose is "for no reason" we have no idea how a tarantula sees/feels its world so anything that we feel is mundane is something they feel they need to fight for their life for. Generally I try not to suddenly shake the cage or blow on them and that seems to keep most from getting upset, but you can never know what will set them off.

Only if I look at her. I don't shake or blow on tarantulas, that's stressful. That stinks about your p metallica. I've had my girl since she was a sling. And she's not skittish nor defensive. She's truly docile.

Well I don't go around shaking and blowing on my spider either but sudden movements or air vibration seem like the first thing they pick up. Also the metallica used to never be like that, he was a pretty chill specimen when I got him back in January, but the recent molt has turned him rather defensive. Also "he" is growing slower than my other pokies of both genders, still molts every two months but never grow much.

My 1" L.p threw a threat pose at me today for the first time. I opened his container to feed him like I do every few days but something set him off today. It was funny and cute to see such a small spider standing its ground.

Yeah defensiveness is very useful in wild, Ts are a lot stronger than true spiders though. There venom is probably weaker, except old worlds.:biggrin:

I actually got a pretty menacing threat pose from my largest P.cambridgei sling today. Its amazing that a creature that small can be so bold.
