Question about MM's

Ok, so I've recently learned that MM's don't live long, right? But they have to be mature to breed, is that correct? So do you constantly have to get MM's to keep breeding? Not that I plan on breeding, but I'm just trying to understand as much as possible about the hobby. Breeders must go through MM's like crazy.

Imagine that after hitting puberty, you were sent around the world to sex up as many beautiful ladies as you could until you died.
If they were nasty, or tried to eat you because they didn't like your tap dancing, you could just run away until the owner got fed up and sent you to the next, hopefully sexy, lady.

Wow, you really glossed over the "try to eat you" part. They don't always try to eat you. Sometimes they just eat you.

However, if I knew I only had 6-12 months or so to get some pooty I think I'd risk death at the hands of menacing fangs too.

But all depending on conditions and species, i've read that some species's males can take up to 10 years to mature!

That's a pretty extreme case but not impossible. A T like that would most likely have 18 months or more of virility before he died. I've heard talk of captive male G. rosea who make it past 2 years but I suspect it is much more rare in the wild.

Yeah, definitely rare in the wild.

I do have a MM G. rosea though who is damn near 3 years ultimate, and he still looks great. Still builds sperm webs, too.

This is the best thread ever. I was telling this guy at chipotle about tarantulas and how the MMs die shortly after they mature, and he said "Well that's why there's so many immature men around then! So we don't die! Now I have an excuse!"
