On another note, have you seen the post with "Cuban Purple (Phormictopus Sp.purple)" for sale? Check it out: http://www.arachnoboards.com/ab/showthread.php?t=167110
I should ask them if they have pictures!
Can I ask where you're getting the "Cuban" from? The species usually sold as such is from Hispaniola, not Cuba. Check out my numerous comments in the last few pages of the "genus Phormictopus" picture thread in regards to this species.
EDIT- oh i see it's in the thread title. I would first suggest the Cuban name is a mistake, without more info.

In reference to my last post, is Avicularia laeta from Cuba or Puerto Rico?
Puerto Rico (and a few other islands but not Cuba)

Thanks for posting that pic CodeWilster! Thats a beautiful spider!

GoTerps, You seem to be very well read, can you suggest a book or 2 that cover the care and breeding of Cyrtopholis portoricae, Holothele culebrae, Avicularia laeta, Cithacanthus spinicirus, Phormictopus platus, and Phormictopus auratus? And everyone else, suggest a book too!

I have been keeping and breeding insects for over 10 years now, I have kept various arachnids (some HOT), but I never really got into Tarantulas. I have kept a few of the common species, but I always sold or traded them off. Just recently I found a new interest in Tarantulas and I find that my interest is growing. Since I am half Cuban and Puerto Rican, I figure the next T. I get could be one of the above species from those islands. I currently have a B. smithi sling and what was given to me as a "Texas Aphonopelma" (I will get a proper ID for it once I get some pics up or once it sheds again).

Anyway, I thank you all for helping me with the info and helping build my interest in Tarantulas!

I doubt such book exists.

I can only comment on H. culebrae since it is the only species I bred in your list. Pretty straightforward and easy. Female is not agressive with the male. Mating is quick. My females produced eggsacs less then two months after mating. After a month at roughly 25 celcius (day, night at 20 - 22) you have 1st instars, count another month for 2nd instar. Roughly 50 to 60 babies or so in the two clutches I have produced. Babies are super hardy, eat like pigs and grow fast.

I mated P. auratus (or at least what I suspect my be so, was sold to me as P. cubensis). Mating is easy, but never obtained any eggsacs.

I hope it helps a bit

Thanks Martin,

I was doubting that there was a single book. I figured that people would mention several books that would cover those species, Same thing with web sources.
So what is the temperment of the H. culebrae and P. auratus you have kept? I used to do invert shows for kids, but I doubt this would be a spider to take out and show.

Acro,

H. culebrae behaves pretty much like most Ischnocolinae, they are stress balls and they burrow, so you do not see them much.

For the Phormictopus, the ones I have ar really not too bad as far as temperament goes. They are gorgeous, so really nice display animals. If you meant handling, then I would not recommend, but I am not much of a handling type of person.

Take care

Martin
