I have heard alot of people have had problems with the BPS slings. It is unsure why they are dying.:(

My guess would be that is why BSP's have so many slings.....because a high percentage of them are going to die young for whatever reason (eaten, illness, etc..)

Hmmmm.......All 14 of mine are still alive. In fact, they all just molted a few weeks ago.

I disagree.I have 100 of those slings and not one has died.
Lasiodoria slings are very hardy.
While in the wild many may be eaten. In captividy i have never had hi losses

I don't have the contest slings but I have 4 L. parahybana slings from Swift that were barely 1/4" at about the same time as the contest ended and they are good. I keep mine on damp substrate, limited ventilation/higher humidity, temps between 75-80F and I feed pre-killed gutloaded crickets twice a week. They are good eaters and just molted the day before yesterday. I don't hear things about these slings like I've heard about A. versicolor slings. Maybe they were exposed to extreme temp or pesticide during shipping.

Longbord1,

As you know I lost one during a molt (and unfortunately that does happen) and one is in the care of RugbyDave. That leaves 3 that seem to be doing well (Dave?). Actually, really well. After that last molt they are taking bigger cricket parts and are eating more aggressively.

I'm not really sure what happen to the one you kept.

From my experience with parahybana slings and Lasiodora species in general they are very hardy spiders. Hopefully the losses stop for you. Good luck.

I gave all but 6 of my original 15 away. Of the 6 that I kept, 6 are alive and well.

How have you been housing yours?

I save the vials that I get spiders from Swifty. That is what I used to house my L. parahybana slings in. They are all nice and fat.

you don't have them in 10-gallon tanks, do you? and they're not on cedar bedding, right? how are you keeping them? your mortality rate seems extremely high...

Hey longbird,

Its one thing to be competent but its entirely another issue to reject any helpful suggestions. No reason to get angry here.

The fact is if youve had alot die then either theres something wrong with your keeping or by some coincidence you managed to get a bunch of pitiful lasiodora.

Have you ever had mold problems? what are you keeping them in? whats the ventilation like? These are all important questions and you should probably consider them and acknowledge that some people here have been keeping T's alive for an extremely long time.

Hope you let us help you,

-V

Are they 2.5 oz condiment cups? If so, IMO, that is too big for your s'lings at this point in time. It would probably be fine in about 2 or 3 molts though.

I think that this is especially true if you are feeding live food. IME, it is too hard for that small of a spider to find a 1 or 2 week old cricket in such a large container.

I recommend squishing your crickets' heads and then tossing them right in front of your tarantula. Believe me, your spiders wont care if the crickets are dead. They will still slurp them up!

I have mine in babyfood jars and I'm in the process of saving the large sized JIF peanut butter jars for when they get bigger.
