ok so i have 3 of the littly guys (bodies maybe 1/2" long) so im keeping them in kritter keepers for the time being. problem is, most crickets are too big for them so i have some d.hydei to feed them. those flies will walk up the sides of the tank and make their way out of the slotted lid. is there any way to contain them? i watched them in the kritter keepers and the whips did not seem interested in eating despite having gone a little over a week with no food. i heard they werent gung ho about catching their food so i imagine they would eat the flies given time, but i need a way to keep them in there long enough for that to happen. how can i do that?

Try putting some fruit or a small dab of medium under the hide the whips are. The flies should congregate around it and perhaps will occasionally go up onto the hide where they can be picked off by them.

They feed better at night IME.

i fed them at night, but the whips would just avoid them. one possibility for that perhaps is that they are all from the same litter so are all around the same age. one just molted so maybe the others are about to molt too. i dont know if they dont eat shortly before or after molting, though. and still, wanderng fruit flies could still escape out of the top of the thing if they wanted to. iwas wodnering if the tank could be lined with anything to hold them in maybe.

I don't think stuff like bug barrier or vaseline would stop them. A new lid could be in order. But IME with the fruit available wandering is not so bad.

I'd reccomend buying some crickets and hatching out some pinheads. Not too hard to do, and they won't be able to escape.

you can put a piece of cloth under the lid (over the top) to keep in the flies. However, FF aren't enough.

I like dtknow's idea, putting a little piece of apple real close to their whips. The FFs love to hang out on and around their food. I've been catching all my fruit flies this way in a vial. I've never had a tailless whip but it makes sense to me after watching FFs.

well they didnt seem to want anything to do with the apple pieces. they just scattered. they would walk over and around it but did not care about it. so much for that x.x
