I just got my tiger today and plan on moving him to his next home within the next few weeks. I am pretty new to the hobby and am trying to accumulate as much information for all my tarantulas as possible. As far as housing I understood a more vertical enclosure was better. I purchased 2 and would like to hear people’s opinions on which one would be better. The tall skinny one I wasn’t sure if it was too narrow for him. The first pic is my T and the second is the 2 houses I bought. Please help. And thanks in advance

I would go with the clear empty one with ventilation holes on every sides, and on top (more the better, depends on where you are located).

Just about enough substrate to hold vertical cork bark in place, and a water dish.

Not the exact one, but below is the enclosure for my Poecilotheria rufilata sling that’s about 1”.

Tall one is too skinny- short one is too short IMO. I keep my Poki in something that is tall version of the short one

Use the enclosure on the right. In the hobby, we just refer to those as Mainstays. The one you have is the half gallon version, but Walmart also sells a gallon version that has the same footprint, it's just taller. I use Mainstays exclusively for my arboreal slings and juveniles. Slings with a DLS between 1" to 2"-2.5" get half gallons, 2" to roughly 4" get gallons. As far as hole placement, I have that standardized as well. The lids get 9 holes in a 3 x 3 pattern in the middle. The 2 sides with the handle recesses get 28 - 32 holes in a 4 x 7 or 4 x 8 grid pattern (I've attached pictures for reference). A lot of keepers don't use Mainstays because of the ledge at the top. Sometimes the T's will hunker under it during a rehouse and people have difficulty convincing it to come out. I have a catch cup system I designed for this that integrates with the opening on Mainstay enclosures that has pretty much negated the problem for me. Mainstays are cheap, readily available, easily modified, look great on a shelf, and offer good visibility into the enclosure. If I ever hear that Walmart is going to discontinue them, I'd probably buy hundreds just so I can use them the rest of my tarantula keeping "career".
