Now to my question - what is known of this species so far? Where do they live? What's their range? What makes them a new species?

Thanks,

Jake

the correct name is: Poecilotheria hanumavilasumica SMITH, 2004 – no brackets and it's only SMITH who described this species
see also:
  • SMITH, A. M. (2004): A new species of the arboreal Theraphosid, genus Poecilotheria, from southern India (Aranea, Mygalomorphae, Theraphosidae) with notes on its conservation status. British Tarantula Society Journal 19(2): 48-61.

there have never been Poecilotheria species described with such scientific names => these are no proper synonyms of Poecilotheria hanumavilasumica SMITH, 2004

all the best,
Martin

Hi!

I know these are no proper synonyms, but they had been nameproposals and confusions about it!

When they first come across this new species in the earlier 2002, maybe earlier than that?! it been called hillyardi which Charpentier originally intended to call it, but no one knows if it´s was a newdiscovered specimen?!

Then after Andrew Smith proposal that this specimes should been called after he´s friend Peter Kirk, but Peter dosn´t want that and he think´s that this species should be called Poecilotheria hanumavilasum after the name of the religious site, which it was found at.
And after that they put "ica" after hanumavilasum => hanumavilasumica
I don´t know why they put "ica" after?!?! someone who knows?!

Sorry for my bad english! :8o

yep, earlier than that and the material has been collected by Charpentier even much earlier! For more details like the dates, the etymology, etc. please see:
