Since I posted it in response to the original article, can we just assume I meant 16-month-old? ;)

I grew up with dogs, and I was the kind of kid who would have gone running up and hugged any dog I saw if I had been able to, but I was taught early on how to interact with animals, and my little terrier was a great teacher as to what was/wasn't acceptable. (He was also the greatest pillow there ever was! :D )

There, I even fixed the original post. I didn't mean to start a war, just meant to say that I blame the grandmother as much as I blame the dog. (Who I DO think needs to be PTS!)

all right then
so it's settled... my bad for taking it the wrong way bro but that's what first came to mind when i read small kid.. i do agree with you that a baby shouldn't be left with a dog unserpervised though, although i still believe most dogs wouldn't do anything to the baby if raised proper... i think once a kid hit's 5 or so it's not such a big deal as long as it's the family dog and it's tame... there's a very slim chance of a family dog attacking a member of the family in a lethal manner if the dog has been shown a lot of love by the family, specially if it's a playful dog then usually anything you do to them that a wild (right word?) dog would take as a threat they'd take as play...

my guess is that dog wasn't raised properly and was probably neglected a lot...

You're probably right. Unfortunately I've seen a lot of dogs owned by elderly people (Not all, but a lot) who get neglected because the person just doesn't have the time/money/energy it takes to take care of the dog, and a pitty certainly takes a lot of energy.

(BTW, Do you often call females 'bro'? ;) :D )

my bad ma' :8o (is that better? :D ).. lol.. i guess i assumed you where a dude cause i was raised in this stereotypical society and sub-conciously i think girls are most likely to have names like, soft-pink-bunny... lol... my bad again.. if you where a guy and had the name pink-bunny-hopper or something like that i'd naturally assume you where a dude.. had i known you where a lady i wouldn't have been so harsh, sorry about that... this forum should have little symbols under people's names so we know who and what we're talking to as names can be misleading..

take care...

I really can't belive what I am hearing .... I have worked with Dogs Of all Sizes Breeds and ages. and I will tell you this DOGS CAN AND WILL BITE IF PROPER CARE IF NOT TAKEN! I love Dogs But I was VICIOUSLY attacked By a Black LAB! And a Dalmation!!!!
Right now I work With 12 PITBULLS 3 Adults and 9 Puppies and They are the sweetest things But i still would Not leave a Child Alone With a Dog ... Chows are actually Meanier then Pitbulls and Quicker to Bite I knwo I have had 2 Of them and I Love Chows to it Just Takes Understanding and love and Care when Working with Dogs and You have to Be aware Everysecond Of what they are doing with Children I have Childern My self and a Very Sweet Golden Retreive But I still don't trust him alone with My 4 year old Or My Brothers and Sisters Kids People get animals and Don't work with them or Train them And they end up with Not BAD Dogs But Dogts that have No understanding for what they are doing Wrong ...even Worse Those that do traain Dogs to be Viscious and mean Then Someone gets Killed over it Its Cruel And Sicking How People Always Blame the animal ...Wake Up People its Not always the animal ....Its the Stupid HUMANS thats make them that way !!! So Don't Blame the Dog He Might Not have Known any better ....not saying the dog was right in what he did but still ...

Cavina: While I try not to generalise by breed of god ever, you mentioned Dalmatians, and I want to add that my experiences with Dalmatians have led me to believe that the breed is NOT appropriate for most people...they seem to me to be very unpredictable, and aggressive more often than other dogs.

This may just be my experience, but they now make me nervous if I see one when I'm out walking my dogs. -_-

I have seen a Dalmation tear apart a young corgi puppy. It was aweful. That same Dalmation was later put down for nearly killing a child. And I dont think it was just this individual dog, I wouldnt trust the entire breed.

I was raised around pits, my parents had them until I was 5 and our last one had to be put down for killing the neighbors doberman (the pit was attacked by the doberman, who was a poorly treated show dog). The two pits we had were extremely gentle with me and were often left to "babysit" me. The reason I was left with them was because I was a good kid, that was taught early not to poke and prod at animals. I went to vet school with my Dad when I was little and learned quite a bit about animals there. So it has to do alot with how the kid acts.

Unfortunatly this happend in Detriot, and its not all that great of a city, no offence to people that live there. But I imagine they werent living in one of the more upperclass neighborhoods either. So far the only part about the parenting that was brought up was the irresponsibility of the grandmother. I am under the impression that a 16mo kid is very impressionable and certainly able to imitate its parents. Who knows what goes on in their home. There could have been fights where the child saw the dad beating the mom or vice versa. Violence is taught at an early age. And even if the grandmother was watching, would she have stopped the kid from hitting the dog as it imitated what it saw at home?

There are so many factors that could have gone into this, that its really hard to say why it happend. But I beleive everything should be questioned, especially revolving around the death of a child. But Im sure this isnt the case over there in Detriot. Its more than likely going to be deamed the dogs fault automatically.

Yes the dog was probably treated poorly and neglected, but that doesnt make it a bad dog. Its unfortunate that it was a pit that will be automatically put down, because with some rehabilitation it would make a fine pet for the right owner. Its such a shame that these wonderful animals have been given such a bad name because of human irresponsibility.
