Pine Dowels?

Hello all, it's good to be back!

I have a quick question regarding the use of pine wood dowels, the kind that are often found at craft and hardware stores, in my spider enclosures. I am aware that both cedar and pine shavings can be/are toxic, but I'm curious as to whether or not the use of more refined pine dowels could be harmful? The idea is to use the dowels (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil, perhaps slightly less) as structures for the building of webs, as opposed to going out and collecting/disinfecting tree branches. Specifically, I would be using these in my Latrodectus enclosures mostly, but possibly also with a few orb weavers as well. I would use another type of wood, but so far it seems that pine is all I can find. Obviously if it is an extreme health hazard I will make something else work, but I like the idea and look of the dowels, nice and neat, which is quite soothing for my ocd. I imagine in their webs the spiders will have limited contact with the dowels themselves, but maybe somebody with more experience in the area could point me in the right direction? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I can't speak on the use of refined pine as I avoid it completely out of choice, I think some people use ice lolly sticks for anchor points I've seen a few setups use this method but I don't keep Latrodectus myself so can't give any other tips than that.

Most large hardware store have hardwood dowels right next to the pine (check lowes and home depot), they are usually slightly darker in color and more expensive. But I think they will be fine, if your really worried and still can't find hardwood you might want to think about sealing them with polyethylene and let them sit for a week or 2 to let them cure.

They will be fine. Spiders are pretty tough to begin with. I've used a variety of cheap pine dowels with no impact on my lifespan recordings.

No need to go to a hardwood store, they charge way more.

Go to Fred Meyer or Target (Fred Meyer has great selection if you got one in your area).

Anyway go to the craft supply/school supply section, you can find a variety of dowels and sticks that work perfect. I have become fond of the 4-6 inch thin wood sticks that are like 2 dollars for 30? I don't have to trim them and they fit perfectly into standard jam jars. Really cheap at these types of stores for some reason.
