Martin,

this is what Rogerio Bertani answered Thomas in a e-mail:

[snipp]
thanks, Rogerio Bertani wrote me something similar (see also this thread >>click here<< or this one >>hier klicken<< (german)) – really sad that SCHMIDT did describe it anyway! Even this behaviour of SCHMIDT doesn't surprise me anymore, everytime when he is doing this again I am a little bit "shocked" about him. He knew that Richard GALLON has been working on a revision of the genus Pterinochilus, but even knowing this he described the female of P. mamillatus. He knows that J.-P. RUDLOFF is working on a revision of the genus Phormictopus, but recently described Phormictopus piephoi and mentioned in this paper that Rudloff is working on a revision. He knew that... many cases like this and the "ironic" part: In some articles some years ago SCHMIDT is talking about the code of honor / ethical code, that no one should describe a species when he knows that someone else is already working on it. He wrote in that case one should contact the other one and see if one could work together on it – seems this code of honor does only apply to others but not to him! =;-(

Here is the part in which he is talking about the code of honor: SCHMIDT, G. (2001):
"...Von den fünf Anhängen ist der über die Ehrenpflicht unbedingt lesenswert. Daraus seien zwei Punkte erwähnt: 2. Ein Zoologe soll keinen neuen Namen veröffentlichen, wenn Grund zu der Annahme besteht, dass eine andere Person das gleiche Taxon bereits erkannt hat und im Begriff steht, dafür einen Namen einzuführen. Befindet sich ein Zoologe in einer solchen Situation, soll er mit der anderen Person in Verbindung treten. ..."

all the best,
Martin

Welcome to theraphosid taxonomy politics people :) Trust me, this is but a tiny cross section of the problem, for this exact issue has come up before numerous times in the past (and far, far worse too, but not for this thread).

Vitalius cristatus not Nhandu cristatus!

actually it got renamed as nhandu cristatus from vitalius cristatus
I cant remeber the year or the paper to back it up though.

also the L. cristata got renamed as vitalius cristatus ages ago as well.
so what you basically have is a nice nhandu on your hands grins they make great T's and your enjoy it loads I know I do mine.

for upto date names and classifications please see The World spider list
I cant remeber the link to it but I am sure google will find it for you easyerly enough.

If I'm reading the world spider catalog correctly(here), V. cristatus =>L. cristata, and N. chromatus is a valid, and seperate sp..... Not an expert though, just reading the catalog as I understand it.........
Digging up old threads is funny.....:)

you guys do realize that this thread is 2+ years old right?

for the record:

Lasiodora cristata IS a valid species but we've never had it in the pet trade; Lasiodora cristata been called Acanthoscurria cristata, Vitalius cristatus, and Pamphobeteus cristatus but has since been transferred back to Lasiodora.

Nhandu chromatus is also valid species; once upon a time everyone thought that what is Nhandu chromatus in the pet trade was actually Lasiodora cristata, which it was not - it was a new species that had been unnamed until '04.

Was just going on what I had remebered from what I was told ages ago I was unaware that this had been fully sorted out now though thanks for the heads up. I just know I had brought a Vitalius cristatus and had to re label it as a nhaddu chromatus. I had also been informed that this species before that was classified as L.cristata. I think but might be wrong that as L.cristata has never been seen other than the species identifcationm samples there is some question as to if they are the same or not would love to get this sorted out for good though. does anyone know if they have finally been properly compared?
