If that fells to work we could always get the media involved, they are always iching for "public interest" story about a place that is not doing stuff right to people or animals and they confront the owner of the stores about it. Just an idea though.......
that's exactly what I did. Went to www.petco.com and got the email addy for customer complaints etc. You just need the store number, which you can also find on their website. Document dates, times, exactly what you saw, employee response to it, etc.
They do have a procedures manual, but some of the info is WRONG. I gave the person that called me back, the ATS website info, and told them that the experts there would verify my suggestions.
Apparently it worked, since they actually have a waterdish with water in it, and no sponges.

Awesome! I'm going to do the same after I visit my local petco and see their latest neglects.

I had a store here that was really bad about the way they kept their arachnids. I went in one day and talked to the owner. I told him I was gonna buy a 75 gallon tank, hood and stand and some scorps from him, but his neglect had apparently rubbed off on any descent employee he might have had and that he could keep it all. Two days later, I saw him at a shopping center and he did everything he could to beg me to inform him better about the proper keeping of scorpions and other arachnids. I have been working with him frequently for about eight months now and he's become the largest and best invert dealer in a 50 mile radius. He is now one of my very good friends. I have purchased many aquariums from him since that date as well as many scorpions and tarantulas, pedes and the whole nine yards.
I have only gotten to go to petsmart on occasions because they are thirty minutes away from me, but the last time I went, I gave everyone in there a real good show. I think almost all, if not all persons in the building had left before the cops showed up, some of which were employess. *lol* I consider myself to be an extremly quiet person and very courteous, but informed them that they would recieve no business from any type of pet hobbyist or petlover I would ever meet near the area. I left my number just in case they were interested in changing their ways and in the hopes that a higher up would call me. Sure enough, the district manager called me a couple days ago (finally) and left a message, but I have yet to have to chance to call him back. I'll probably just stop in an see what's going on. District manager is the one who dropped all charges on me. heheh... There may be hope for mine yet!

adios,

as you all know i work at petco as an animal specialist. im not going to defend against anything any of you said here, because ive seen such things myself, in other stores. oddly my store is the only one in the district where the gm wont allow a decent selection of inverts. i have a rosehair, and three emperor scorpions. the other stores get a few different species with a few representatives of each, which get crappy treatment by ignorant specialists. that being said i do my job efficiently. the mislabelling is a problem. by the way if any of you see "kilmanjaro baboons" (usumbaras) buy them while you can. im getting ready to have a chat with corporate to stop the company from selling them anymore. thing is petco isnt supposed to sell anything with "medically significant venom". they didnt even know usumbaras had a bad bite, or that they bit readily. once i pointed out that most of their "specialists" didnt know crap about t's and could very well sell an usumbara to some kid and his unsuspecting parents as his first t, and drew out the possible future court dates, they decided i should gather my info and present it. i just dont think its a good idea for uneducated morons to be dealing with t's like this, and i dont want some idiot telling a kid and his parents "oh no at petco we sell nothing dangerous." then little johnny goes home and tries to handle his first t and loses voluntary movement of his right arm for a while. petco gets sued, theres a well publicized case of a t bite causing harm to little johnny, and the next politician who needs some votes puts in that the big evil spiders we all love be illegalized. ok i put to much thought into this, what were we talking about again??;P
