I second the pair of rats! They are smart, clean and easy to care for. You can litter box train them easily and even teach them cute little tricks!
Just need a nice big wire cage (minimum 2 sq ft per rat and you need at least a pair for them to be happy) lab blocks for the bulk of the diet (I personally use HT 2018) and then fresh veggies and fruit on the side. I also started really enjoying making cute little hammocks and stuff for their cage.
They love attention from their humans!

High maintenance and fictional, two of the most difficult traits to overcome when it comes to pets.

Chinchillas have literally no odor compared to other pocket type pets and if you raise them, they have darling little personalities. only buy one from a local breeder, anything sold in th pet store is likely to be unsocialized and will bite.
