Pesticide exposure risk

I live in a condo complex, and this year they are spraying pesticides around the foundation as a preventative for ants. I called the HOA to see if I can opt out, but that is not an option. How screwed are my spiders? What can I do to prevent any deaths? Honestly, this sucks. I hate living in a condo where you don't get a say in what happens.

Depends how they are spraying and where you are located from the ground.

i spray ants every spring. I don’t have a choice or else they come inside.

i make sure all my windows are closed and change clothes. I use a different door to come inside.

i also use store bought products, and spray by hand alongs the foundation and windows.

When I hear fumigate, I think inside. What do you think? I'm curious. They are just doing the outer foundation so hopefully it's nothing crazy. Then again, I don't know what to expect.

What do you think?
Call and find out

I’ve had peeps come in and spray at the floor against the wall with no issues. I know peeps who had neighbors lawn treated and that killed a few of theirs.

unless you move them offsite for a while there’s nothing you can do

Most likely a Micro Encapsulated Type Spray, available only to Licensed Pest Controllers and applied to the lower foundation.
Adhere's to the Ants, which upon returning to Ant Colony are ' Cleaned '
Transfering Poison among the Colony.

I was responding to the link they posted about fumigation; it sounded like it was inside. The complex is only spraying on the outside of the foundation. From what I know, they do not need to do inside. If they were doing inside, I would for sure move everything.

i know that was inside. It was to give you an idea of how strong some things can be.

i let you know how i do it at my house.

but professionals dont use the same products. The vapors can be strong. So the only way you will know is to call and find out what product they will use, and research the information about that chemical.

you will have a better insight on how persistant it is, and how it travels in the air.

You are right, I'm going to give the company a call.
feel free to share the chemical here. We can all learn a thing or two. im a horticulturist, and deal with pesticides. i like to learn what is being used everywhere else.

The pesticide is called Taurus SC.
ok so thats a start.

9.1% Fipronil

now we read this:

it can kill spiders.

that being said, this product is used to act upon contact and or by being eaten.

id close all windows. Make sure no vents allow the residue to travel in the condo. Id even put towels below doors.

they will do this on a sunny or no rain day, preferabley with low winds.

propylene glycol is mixed in there and thats what holds the poison. Its made to coat everywhere. So the point of this pesticide is not to be like a gaz or fumigation.

is there a risk? Always.

it resembles what i use outside my house. I even use it inside. My product is ant b gone, it uses Permethrin. Its different, but also made to act on contact, and it paralyses. Perm is also toxix via inhalation. Its all about how you use it. Where and when.

you could easily seal off your tarantulas with plastic tarp for a day or two.

the winds outside will blow away vapor residues.

we read the report, well i am assuming you did. Those reports are very helpful.

i don’t know much, but i love research. We can help each other out! this is what AB is for.

many people know more, we even have a chem specialist @HooahArmy. They know more.

The highest risk pesticides that I have experience with are those exclusively designed for arachnids. Before I ever got into tarantulas I bought Terro specially the one for arachnids. The brick house I live in used to be infested with brown recluse.

One thing I remember that the label stated is you only need to spray in one area as the poison actually seeks the arachnids out and kills them.

I'm not downplaying other pesticides in the least. Pest control companies use dual purpose pesticides. My previous house had ant issues. I used a pest control company spray exclusively for ants and arachnids, one pesticide dual targets and it was highly effective.

thats why its important to read the safety sheet. It helps know the active ingredient and research it more.

anyone can do this. I had to get a course on reading these sheets, to get a permit to do my job.

but the people in my class, they were anybody. Its just all about reading and researching. Those who can’t be bothered, are the same who keep this stuff under the sink in their kitchen.

Terro for killing spiders uses Pyrethrins. Its from a plant. But Permethrin is the same only sources differently.

This was many many years ago many years ago before I ever had tarantulas. It doesn't stay active for an extended length of time which is why it has to be done quarterly in a year. Wasn't concerned with ingredients more concerned on getting rid the infestation.

The point is that pest control companies use pesticides that have multiple targets. What one pesticide specially is used for also effects other non-telated pest.

i was agreeing with you before and still am.

i am exposed to pesticides all day anyways. Sometimes I don‘t even shower, “gasp”.

yep.

i even use essential oils, incense and fry eggs on the stove.

before anyone even goes there, the mystery of DKS, goes deeper then someone spraying for ants outdoors, in my opinion.

I have used an incense candle but stopped as I worried it might harm my T's. I always used burning incense or the candle after cleaning house. It was like the house was exorcised 😆

Yup, I'm a guy cleaning house doesn't happen often. When I was married decades ago it happened every week 🤣
